My fiance and I are getting married in January, and will be spending 8 days on Oahu, HI for our honeymoon. I want to do some fishing while we are there, but don't even know where to start really. I know there are numerous options (Marlin, Sharks, shallow water, etc...). My fiance is not the most experienced fisherman....mostly just bass here in Texas with me. However she did catch several Salmon up to 12 lbs on our trip to Alaska last year....I'm just not sure she's ready for anything really big.

Can anyone here recommend some good charter captains? Any other advice you guys might have would be greatly appreciated as well.

i worked over there for a few months and was really disappointed in the fishing. the near shore or onshore stuff isn't fit to eat and offshore is too expensive and most of the boats want to keep your fish. i took a curado reel and bought a rod there and tried to fish around the island off the rocks with very little success. most of the fish i did catch were skin fish, very few scale fish there. the locals that were fishing used old spark plugs for weights so that they could break em off when they got caught in the rocks. hope it's better for ya'll. good luck.

Have fun and enjoy your honeymoon. There's decent fishing but you really need to know where to go. The locals are tight lipped about it because most places are fished out. Personally I did not like Honolulu that much. They have a serious homeless problem right now too. IMHO Honolulu is like any large US city except that it has nice beach. The North shore of Oahu is nicer but pretty touristy and expensive as well. Why not consider the Big Island or Kauai?

Some bad news� the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed the lake to all commercial activities. We were told that all guiding trips were to stop.
The officers are at the lake every day checking to make sure that those of us who were guiding are no longer taking people fishing.

The only thing I can figure is there was a person who drowned in the lake last month and the state, who manages the fishing, and Dole Corp, who owns the lake, went into panic mode. They have been checking everyone who goes near the lake for fishing licenses, entry permits, life jackets, whistle, signal mirror, flares, fire extinguisher, Those of us with boats have been checked for safety gear, and national boat operating certificates, registration, safety checks� everything� I was checked two days in a row by the same officers. (I was taking Boy Scouts out for their Fishing Merit Badges). It�s ridiculous, but there is nothing we can do about it.

So as of now, Hawaii Bass Fishing is no longer able to take any fishing trips. I�ve ask World Wide Fishing Guide to take down our advertisement. I�m sorry to have to cancel the fishing trip, but the state has put us out of business.

The lake is still open to the public... The peacock bass fishing is still good... but no fishing guides are available... no one rents boats. I do know some anglers who rent a kayak and then go fish the lake.

I went in July of 2007 and we chartered a boat off the big island, can't remember the charter, but the captain was only 24 years old and we caught 1 marlin which we released plus 6 wahoo, we split the wahoo with the captain and they were awesome on the grill, ended up making 2 meals out of them. The 1st minute we had a wahoo, the next 5 minutes we had the marlin, then the wahoo just came about every 20 minutes apart. We rented a 3 story mansion right on the big island and had a blast, saved a bunch on the $$$ as we cooked almost every meal.

Pic of Marlin below. We drew straws for the order of the fishing, the guy who caught the marlin does not even fish, I told him you have no freaking clue what you just did after he caught it, he just smiled!

I went after sailfish/marlin off North Side of Island, I think the captain is dead now.

I booked half boat, other party flaked I went ahead and booked whole boat from me and wife.

Went out stuck 2 swordfish that went about 220 lb and 140 lbs. One fish tailed walk about 150 yards, it was pretty amazing.

Money well spent and a memory I will never forget.
