ipad problems. Screen goes blank in the middle of programs and the keyboard doesn't work. Any suggestions appreciated. It's 4 year old.

Make sure you have the iOS up to date.
Goto Settings>General>Software Update

That sounds like a hardware problem to me. Make sure you have a good backup in case it goes completely tits up on you.

Could be, but if you are running apps that have been designed to run with newer iOS and you have older iOS, then they will likely not function properly. Causing screen glitches and keyboard weirdness, which on a touchscreen device, is a screen glitch.
