Gussick,
I'm with you on this one, it was always 'sand bass' and 'sandies' as a kid, but once I got to school, it quickly turned into 'white bass'.
barfish turned into yellow bass, yellow catfish turned into flathead catfish, those lesser sunfish stopped being perch, perch became perch, and gaspergoo became freshwater drum.
I still throw out the word gaspergoo from time to time though. It is just too damn fun of a word not to use.

I was raised calling them sand bass and that's what I still call them. I was also raised calling bluegill and sunfish "perch"...and that's what I still call them.

I was also raised calling them sandies but I have recently began calling them white bass. It seems to appeal to my customers more that way.

Well, being reared (oh, I'm Sorry,'raised') here in Gods country 'Texas' for the last 60 years. I know how to speak Texan, but I also understand 'American', so if someone say's 'White Bass' I know that they are saying 'Sandie'. Bluegill, Brim, Sunfish, Perch, are all the same thing here in our great state, and down here we even enjoy eating them little critters. Not so in some other states.
When I was a kid (about 18)I went to visit some family near Boston Mass. and went fishing/camping. I Caught some very nice bull bluegills and I took them back to the dock, and you would have thought I had killed someone! "We don't eat those, those are trash fish" "And we don't eat Catfish either"... I ate those Brim anyway and have never been back since.
Called and talked to my brother who lives near Boston and in our conversation I told him about a trophy Black Bass I had caught, and he ask "now what is a black bass?" After a little explaning he says "Oh! you mean a Large Mouth Bass"... I swear it's the truth

I called them Sand Bass when I use to fish Lake Livingston..They were always caught on sandy bottoms. However, I looked up TPWD and what they call them: "White Bass (Morone chrysops)" Other names: Sand Bass, Barfish, Streaker, Silver Bass http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/wtb/

My grandpa always called them sandies, sand bass, or sandbas-tards. He also calls freshwater drum gaspergoo, black bass were hybrid carp, and yellow catfish were apps, yellow bass were eye sucker or bar fish, sunfish were bait. He must have been right because thats what I call them.

I've noticed they are sometimes called bar fish. We always used the term bar bass for yellow bass (at Tawakoni). This is the first time I've heard sandies called bar fish. I also saw this at another website this morning. (North Texas Catfishing) If sandbass (morone chrysops)had more bones we could call them bony morone.

How about you southern boys calling Bays creeks. Creeks are what you can jump over!

Sometimes in the summer you can jump across them.
