Hello all. I'm a lifelong fisherman from the deep woods of northcentral Pennsylvania. My fiance and I are going to be relocating to The Woodlands in March.

I know absolutely nothing about the fishing available in that area. I'd really like to make friends with some folks who wouldn't mind showing an aspiring Texan the local fishing scene.

I'm currently a police officer for the town of Danville, PA. My radio identifier is Delta Eleven, hence the handle here. I'm hoping to land a job on a department close to The Woodlands, where we will be living. We're moving there because my fiance has been offered a very attractive job (if I don't get hired as a police officer, it won't hurt us financially if all I do is fish all day... ;D ). I love all sorts of fishing -- if it has fins and gills, I wanna catch it!

If you want to get to know me a little better, feel free to drop me a line.

Conroe, Livingston are fairly close. I believe you can bank fish lake woodlands. There is also lake Houston that has a decen crappie population. There is also lake Raven a little farther north.

Fayette Co Lake is about a 1.5 hr drive West and offers some excellent bass fishing.

Look into a bass club. I know there is a woodlands bass club in that area.

Oh Yeah, welcome to Texas

Gotta back up BMCD on this one. Conroe has been laying out some rather large lunkers in the recent months. Golf course ponds are ALWAYS a sure bet in that area. Enjoy the Woodlands.

Welcome to Texas, hope you like it hot!

I lived in Leola PA for about 3 years. I learned a lot about fishing rivers and streams for smallies. In fact I used to work for Kinsey's Outdoors in Mount Joy.

Texas is a whole different bowl of fish. You can apply a lot of the smallie information twards the largemouth.

I am a little to far away but I do get down that way often as I have a daughter in Spring TX.

Also my father was a police officer for 30 years. You should have no problem getting on at one of the locals.

Welcome Delta!!!! You will think you have died and gone to heaven when it comes to fishing here compared to where you've been. These lunkheads forgot to mention 2 of the premier Lakes in the country....Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Big Sam is about 2 hrs away from the Woodlands and The Bend is about another 1/2 hr-45 min. Conroe is 15 minutes (an hour in Rush Hour Traffic) from The Woodlands, Livingston is about an Hour away, Fayette County (Best Lake in Texas from October-May) is about 2 hours from the Woodlands, and Somerville is about another 20 minutes further. Your Gonna Love it.....I'm a member of the Humble Bass Club, and we have members from the Woodlands area also, but if your looking for close, I'm sure there are closer clubs. As far as your work situation, you shold not have much problems getting a job in Law Enforcement here as virtually every department around is short handed. Also, the Texas Prison System is HQ'd in Huntsville which is only about a 45 minute drive from the Woodlands.

You will be right down the road from Conroe. You'll be pretty close to Livingston as well. They are good lakes for Largemouth, White Bass, Hybrid Bass, Crappie, and Catfish.

Both are man-made lakes that were impounded 30+ years ago. There are plenty of maps available for those two lakes.

If you want to drive a little, there are plenty more lakes... you've also got the bay and gulf within an hour and a half. You won't be hurting for opportunities, that's for sure.

If you are moving from Pennsylvania to Texas you don't need help, you need congratulations.

Delta 11, welcome to texas. I got stuck living in Watertown, NY for 3 years, glad thats over. Now I live in willis, about 15 min. north of the woodlands. If you would like, i ll take you out on conroe one day. i work four days on, four days off so i get to fish quite a bit. Conroe has some big fish, but it is not the easiest lake to fish. As far as jobs, stay away from TDCJ, the prisons in huntsville, doesnt pay [censored] and theyll hire any 18 year old kid looking for a job. There are plenty of departments around. I think Conroe PD and Houston PD are hiring. If you have any more questions about the area send my an email.

Lack of places to go fishing will not be a concern.

Thanks to all of you (except the guy who insulted PA).

Pennsylvania is a wonderful state. I've lived here and loved it for over 36 years.

I'm going to miss the mountains being all around me, and I'm not so sure about how I'll handle summer days of 115 degree temps and 95% humidity. But, I sure won't miss the snow and ice during winter.

We flew down to look for someplace to live a couple weeks ago, and everyone there was griping about it being cold. My fiance and I had to laugh. It was 48 degrees in Houston. Where we had just come from, it was more like 4.8 degrees.

I'm assuming that in the Texas climate, there is no freshwater trout fishing to speak of. Unless maybe you have bottom-release dams on some of the waterways? Living in northcentral PA, I love my flyfishing!

I'm intrigued by the saltwater opportunities, too. But, that's a different forum.

I'm looking at all the options for a law enforcement job. If anyone knows someone at a department I can talk to, I'd appreciate that info, as well.

Thanks again! (Even to you, Yassir Sanchez! We Pennsylvanians can take a joke...)

Delta Eleven, welcome to Texas from a fellow brother. All I can say is get ready to sweat, especially wearing duty gear in the summer.

Have you looked into challenging the TCLEOSE test, or are you wanting to go through an academy?

I'm almost positive that Houston PD is still hiring and maybe still offering a sign-on bonus of sorts. Not that it's remotely close, but Galveston PD is also hiring - talked to some recruiters who dropped off flyers the other day that were sent all the way to Texarkana to drop off information. I remember seeing another agency hiring in the Houston area, but I'll have to check which one it was and get back to you.

I know that Texas Parks and Wildlife does a trout release each year at Claiborne Park in Vidor TX, usually twice in February. It depends on weather and all. I've never went out for it, but I hear it draws a good crowd.
