What's the does and don't with this style fishing. What is the best bait or your favorite bait to put on it. And last but not lease how do y'all rig it up. If you can't tell I'm new to it and would like to no how to fish this style of fishing. Thanks for the help and advise

Check on YouTube for Aaron Marten's drop shot videos. He's one of the best at doing it and did some great videos walking through it.

One thing that I JUST NOT learned about drop shotting...is you don't have to tie the weight on.... no need for a knot at the weight, just clip the sinker on the line

Another way is a good guide that uses the drop shop shot method is invaluable. hands on instructions and can put on fish and actually feel the bite at times in can be different than other methods . if you want to fish fork. there is Eric Wright,Josh priest,Zach hughes I no there is many more but I no these guys fish against the in different tournament series I no they catch fish.

I like using a baitcaster for drop shotting. I have tried several different 2 power rods until I tried a Reel Time drop shot rod. This is a fantastic drop shot rod. I use 12 pound Invizx, #1 Owner rigging hook and a 1/4oz drop shot weight.
I use several different brands of finesse baits. Robo, Zoom, Strike King, Berkley and Net Bait.

It only takes one day to become a believer in the drop shot. My favorite worms are: xcite slim x, roboworm, RI trixie. And those grape smellin renegade worms from Wally world.

I learned a lot from his videos. I usually use a 4 inch yum dinger and just nose hook it. sometimes I will hook it where the point comes out of the head to make it more weedless.
I tried using grubs and flukes but didn't have much confidence so I didn't fish them long enough to produce but I am sure they would work.

As far as what worms to use the possiblities are really endless. Ive had success using the small chigger craws, roboworms, small flukes, the small lake fork hyper worms, etc. etc. Just use your imagination. Rigging is pretty simple now with the special made hooks. Now you can tie whatever knots you want. I usually keep a small spool of 10lb fluoro around to make the weight leader line with. Very versatile way of fishing for sure.

I like to use 7-10 pound flourocarbon, a 2 ft leader, 7'6" G. Loomis NRX spinning rod, and a Shimano Stradic Ci4. Any spinning rod and reel will work.



Roboworm Straight Tail 4.5"

My favorite bait is this straight tail worm. It has a salt release system inside that helps the fish hold on longer. It floats and has really good action. For under $4 a pack, they're the best.

Jackall Cross Tail Shad

If I feel like they're really keying in on baitfish, then I'll throw a Jackall Cross Tail Shad in a baitfish color. They're easy for the fish to eat and they're soft, so they'll hold on longer. These little guys are super cool!

Well.. I just typed about a page reply that went into the bit bucket somehow.. Drop shotting is one of my favorite ways to fish. I've been doing it for about 10 years, starting in Georgia and now in Texas. All of the biggest fish I have caught here have been on a drop shot rig, 6.5lb pb in Texas. I use a Skeet Reese Drop Shot rod, spinning reel, 30lb braid line and 12lb Invivix leader. The leader is about 10' long, to allow for a lot of hangups and break offs between leader re ties, a suggestion I read here on the forum. I use Gamakatsu 1/0 drop shot/split shot hooks and the cylindrical style drop shot sinkers. What I have learned over the years is that its real important to use a palomar knot and wet the floro leader before you cinch the knot. I didn't understand that when I first started and lost a lot fish on the hook set. Leave about a foot of tag line on the knot to attach the weight. As far as baits, I have had good success on just about any soft plastic bait.. Zoom Utails, Roboworms, Yum Dingers, Senkos, Trick worms.. they all will work on a drop shot rig. You can nose hook them or wacky rig with success.
The biggest reason I switched to braid was line twist. When you retrieve the drop shot rig to cast again, a nose hooked worm will spin all the way back. Its not so much wacky rigging them, but nose hooked.. it spins. Using all flouro line, over a fairly short period of time, this can cause issues with the line birdsnesting either on the spool, or around your rod tip.. not good! The braid isn't effected as much but will still do the rod tip rap around after a couple of fishing trips.. the solution is to drag the line with nothing on the end for about 5 minutes at fast idle.. reel it back up and you are good to go.

Yamamoto cut tail is one of my favorite baits but they don't last long

Has anyone ever fished it at night. If so how effective is it.

If you have the money give James Biggs a call. He showed me earlier this year how to use the drop shot and now its my go to when trying to finish out my limit. It really went from never leaving the box to always being on the deck.
