Hi all, Just retired from the Navy and headed out here from San Diego to be near my grandkids. All of my kayak experience has been on the pacific, mostly La Jolla. Fished a couple tournaments, and have been at it for several years. Trying to make the adjustment to Texas fishing. Any advice on when, where to fish in the central Texas area? I live in Liberty Hill, north of Austin.

If you are in the Austin area you are close to a lot of great fishing. Lake Austin has some great bass fishing, lake Buchanan has great white bass and stripers,

Thanks for the welcome. From what I understand, there are multiple bass species, pan fish, and catfish in the area as far as game fish are concerned. I like anything that gives a good fight, or tastes good. Stripers sound good. Maybe I will hit up lake Buchanan. If I get a long weekend, I may head down to the gulf. I've never caught a sea trout or redfish.

Big Wave Dave! Welcome to TFF. I'm an SD native as well. Many times I've fished the NW corner at La Jolla myself in my Hobie. Traded all that in and came out to Texas. Love it out here (except for the mexican food). I do miss pulling on those big tankers at La Jolla.
Don't be afraid to throw BIG wakebaits or hard swimbaits for big bass. If you go to youtube and search "lake austin swimbait" you will find a guy that absolutely slays big bass on west coast swimbaits.
If you are ever up north (DFW area) hit me up and I'll put you on some authentic San Diego mexican food.

Welcome to Texas and the Forum Dave, and thank you ever so much for your service. From where you live let me just whisper this.....Rockport...Port Aransas...... We're just a couple of months away from the Bull Red run in the surf. But the fishing is good there pretty much year round.

Thanks Jerry. I do miss that San Diego Mexican food. If I am up your way, I will get in touch. I have not yet found anything to compare to the Mexican Food in San Diego.

Thanks Dave. I do have my eyes set on the gulf. Missing the ocean out here in Central Texas. One of these long weekends I'll be heading that way.

Also look up Texas kayak fisherman (all together) good site. Corpus/port Aransas isn't far. 3-4hrs is my guess. I have read a few people fish that area from Austin so it's doable. Some people go BTB or beyond the breakers. Kingfish and Cobia are achievable. If you ever head down to Falcon lake let me know. I fish out of my kayak over there.
