First of all, nice article in the March 2007 edition of Saltwater Sportsman, Larry.
Facts are what they are. The guides do a great job of putting their customers on numbers and the available fish. Trophy fish are relative to to an area and a particular body of water. No need for feelings to be hurt. Texoma is almost certainly near the top, if not the best Striper fishery in Texas.
Having said that, a 20 lb. Striped Bass is simply not a trophy anywhere that Striper swim (Saltwater or Landlocked), except perhaps here. For many of the aforementioned reasons, Texas currently possesses a very nice Striper fishery, but certainly not a fishery that produces trophy sized fish. As you are certainly aware, in a great many areas of the country where Striper are prized, it takes a 30+ to even rate a mention, and a 40+ to 50+ to rate trophy consideration.

-We fished for for 20LB stripers every spring on Canyon. I moved 2 years ago to Palestine, but I get a yearning to get down there and do it again. Three years ago I know of two 30lb class fish were caught there> One I caught, and the other, by my friend two weeks later. Thughes is right that they are not as plentiful as before, Canyon during the late seventies was full of fish in the 20lb up class according to the oldtimers on the lake. We fish for these big fish different than schoolies. Making hours of casts{much like muskie fishing} sometimes only to get one two blowups or somtimes no action. Once in awhile you have a magical day and then you think this is what it's like in heaven. {except in Heaven your arms do not get tired}. Most fisherman will not spend 2 to 6 hours throwin a bait that weighs over an 1 ounce up to 4 ounces. If there guys here in TX. that have targeted these fish, I'd love to get together and exchange techniques and stories. To me ther is nothing like a big striper literally trying to mangle your topwater on it's slow waked retreive to the boat. By the way, we landed about one in three big fish that we would hook up with.

I think the fishing is great here. I moved from Denver and fished in streams with waders in very cold conditions to catch 2 rainbow trout. I then released both of them. I love Texoma and the schooling fish here in Texas, it is a blast. I think Sandbass are fun for the whole family. It is not about the biggest fish but about taking my family to have some fun outdoors. Not sure but maybe my reply is off topic Sorry.
