Does anyone know a website with instructions for changing trailer bearings or repacking them? I've had my boat for a little over a year and need to do this. I've done a few google searches and tried searching here without much success.

If it matters, I have a Sportsman trailer on a 16ft aluminum Weldbilt boat. I do not believe there are bearing buddies installed either. I checked their website, but there isn't any documentation on the subject either.

Thanks.

Here is a good one:

They use to have a trailer bearings pinned message here. Not sure what happened to it.

You can also check out the BassBoatCentral.com site, search for bearings, and you should get your eyeballs full of information.

look under general equipt discussions one section down there is a pinned message there. However the one mention here seems great.

Arsonal, most auto parts stores sell a bearing packing tool for under $10 that uses a grease gun. They are very effective at packing grease through a tapered roller bearing. The tool is shaped like 2 cones that sit one on top of the other. There is a grease fitting at the top of the steel tube in the center.

I've packed plenty of roller bearings by hand, and I can still do it just fine if I need to, but just about anyone can pack a bearing with the tool in under 5 minutes, and it is ready to go.

Thanks for all the info. Bass Art, that packing tool sounds great. I will definitely check it out in the next week when I get to working on this.

While you have the bearings & seals out make sure you write down the numbers and get a spare set. I would strongly recommend you get a set of Timken Bearings, they may be a little more expensive but they are the best on the market!!

When in doubt SET THE HOOK!

I didn't realize it due to a cover, but I have bearing buddies on my trailer (my first boat and trailer if you can't tell). I'm going to check them and add grease if I don't need to replace anything yet. The information here has bee an immeasurable wealth of knowledge for me.

I posted in the General Equipment under the other bearings topic, but would losing a bearing buddy "bra" (the cover that goes over the buddies) cause any problems? It doesn't look like it would from looking at the bearing buddy website - I just want to make sure.

I forgot to say, if you subscribe to Bassmaster magazine they have an illustrated article in the Dec. '06 issue.
