  Wichita County, TX We seen this guy over 100 yards away down the dam. It was making a wake. I estimate it to be approximately 8 ft long. You can see how its tail just fades into the water. Very long snake. We are guessing some type of corn snake / non venomous variety. Camera is a Nikon with a 55-200 lens zoomed all the way in on the snake. It swam up into the dam trees and disappeared.

looks kinda like a blotched water snake. They get pretty long and that one has more color contrast than what I normally see on them around here.

after looking at images of blotched water snake, I think that's not what it is. Too much color.

The bright colors were like a golden-orange color.
It looked more like a BIG pet snake, rather than a wild snake.
Seems to brightly colored, like how would it hide and camouflage effectively and live to be that big?!

I don't recall the specific name but it's a water snake . We have those around here . Definitely not a corn .
As far as survival goes , sometimes bright colors are used as a warning to predators . The critter might not be venomous / poisonous but it resembles something that is .
Then again , he might just be lucky . My boss shot a fully-adult albino squirrel last year . You don't see them very often .

Those snakes are most active and hunt at night. I agree it's a water snake because I have a skin from one just like it that is not as brightly colored and was thinking it was a blotched water snake.

Texas rat snake 100%, the red/orange is in between their scales and they swim that way. 100% agree. I caught about a 5 foot Texas Rat swimming across the Pedernales a few years back. Very awesome snakes. Execellent swimmers and excellent climbers. This is a video of the one I caught crossing the Pedernales. I released him near a tree and he started climbing it.

I would say rat snake. Definitely not a water snake cause they don't float their whole body like this snake.
