We will be moving into a house mid April. We've been in an apartment the past 2 years so lawn care wasn't our problem but our new place has a good sized yard and although I only saw one small ant mound I want to get rid of it and keep new ones from popping up. What methods do y'all use?

I broadcast Ortho a few times a year and spot treat any mounds I see. Chases them all next door.

That's what I do.
I use the dry white smelly powder.

I had about 6-7 mounds when I first moved in last June.
After sprinkling in the right amount carefully, they were gone within 2-3 hours.

Since then, I probably had 2-3 pop up over a 9-month span.

When you find mounds, I like the Amdro granules. You sprinkle it around the mound, not on. Later that afternoon, you can watch them carrying it back to the mound as food.

Sort of makes you feel like you have outsmarted them.

Amdro.

Old remedy.
Mom and a tea pot of boiling water.
She would go out just at daylight and pour the water on the hills. I don't think she killed that many
ants but the colony eventually left to escape the irritation.

I pour gas on the mound, usually the oil/gas mixture for 2 stroke.

Just pour a small radius it only makes a dead spot size of a silver dollar

If you are referring to the smelly white powder, then this is correct. Kills the mound within the hour.

One fire ant mound is surrounded by several sub-colonies with their own queen , soldiers and workers . Killing the mound will help but won't necessarily remove all the ants from your property . I prefer a broadcast bait like Amdro since all the colonies will gather the poison .

I control them in the yard but leave them alone in the pasture as they put a dent in the flea and tick population .
