I just got a Fenwick 5wt combo with a medalist reel. What lines should I use for bluegill? I also expect I'll catch the occasional small largemouth along the way.

Please share any resources that will help me get the hang of fly fishing.

Weight forward floating line ought to handle 90% or more of your bluegill angling needs. Five weight line I would imagine. I have no experience with that rod so don't know how well it loads up with a 5 weight line. Sometimes, overlining up a weight can make for better short distance casting.

I would not get to worried about it. You want a 5wt floating fly line. Scientific Angler, Rio, and I really like Cortland any of these lines will do. I suggest buying the best line you can.

Little poppers and some small wooly worms and woolly buggers will start you off.

come by an FFF fly fishing club and the hands-on experience you'll receive at local meeting will save time and frustration.
my club Ft Worth Fly Fishers offers a Fly Fish 101 4 times a year - no gear required- just show up and learn some basic casts, and get help from a mentor on the fishing aspect. I have found it to be very helpful to beginners and it's free to anyone.

Instructor, instructor, instructor. I can cast 3 times further now that I've hand hands on instruction. Youtube videos are great, but a good instructor is 10 times better and well worth the money. As far as the occasional small bass... the big ones will absolutely destroy large flies and when it does you'll be hooked for life.

I live and guide on Lake Buchanan. Thank y'all for the pointers, and if anyone knows a good instructor in the hill country please share. My goal for the year is to get on some topwater stripers and hybrids come fall; of course I will upgrade my equipment by then.

Can't forget about Martin Pursch, owner of Country Flyfisher Shop in Fredericksburg. Great guy and has a lot of flies specific to the hill country. He helped us out when fishing the Llano a month or so ago.
