Headed to Palo Duro tomorrow and will be in Amarillo all weekend, will be smuggling a little fishing gear with me. So if I get a hall pass from the wife where might I find some crappie? Would have to be pretty close to Amarillo because that leash is going to be very short! Only thing I know about the panhandle is I-40 so any advice is welcome.

Your best and only bet is Greenbelt an hour southeast, North of clarendon. I've never fished it myself but hunt just south of there and have heard from people that they do catch crappie. Just don't have any details of how or where.

So it looks like I have a better chance of eating a 72 oz steak than catching a crappie, going to be a long 3 days

When I lived in the Panhandle I would drive over to Lake Vincent in Oklahoma. Its just across the state line after Higgins. That would be about a 2+ hour drive from Amarillo. Lived up there for 46 years that is where I had the best luck. Sorry but that would be my choice. Greenbelt second. Good Luck

Mackenzie has/had a crappie house. I do not know if the drought has dried it out of the water. South of Amarillo near Silverton.

So I didn't find a crappie but I did find this! First one I've seen in the wild in years!

Great pic, the only time I see one any more is when I watch Old Yeller.
