Just thought I'd pass on this link about recent experiences down in Florida with tire reefs. Of course it's in salt water. I've been saving tires for awhile to build my own, but don't know now if I'm going to. What has been others' experience with the effectiveness of using tires in bundles as attractors? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070217/ap_on_sc/tire_reef_blunder_3

That interesting about the tire reefs.
To make a crappie attractant out of tires, stand three tires upright, tie them together forming a triangle, drill holes in the tops of the three tires so air can escape, secure a couple of cinder blocks in the tires. Place several together and you will have a crappie hole.

what are you using to drill holes? they always closed up (the holes) and were difficult to sink.
blue herron, where on Palestine do you reside? I live in Ledbetter and have watched the sinking of several nice brush piles from the deck. Hope to guard them for the owners while they are gone.

2 million tires...
We used tires in our local ponds in South Texas, I think the key words here are salt and fresh water...

sanbasscamp: Lollipop Landing. Our family's been here for 34 years in the same spot. You've probably caught fish in front of my dock. Fifth one from 155 facing the development. The boathouse is on shore with a boat carriage track down into the water. A Red F250 in the back of the house. I'd be glad to trade info with you about my fishin' holes. I'll send you a personal message through here and you can call me if you want to.
XYZ: I think you're right about the salt water being the big variable. Lots more current action and put too close to coral reefs. There is not a lot of information on the web about long term effects of tire reefs in freshwater. Scientific research studies interest me, but I have found few. One that I did find showed an increase of 20% in creel studies from tire reefs over similar bottom structure habitat. I'm gonna sink mine soon unless I come up with something scientifically and environmentally negative because the river authority allowed them when this lake was built and TP&W have been doing it for years.
