For all in the DFW area Southwestern Parts normally has some pretty good deals for used reels. I have bought many from there and still use them today.

These set ups are sold at Bass Pro Shop. I got two of these combo's during the Classic Sale when they have them on sale for $ 99.00 for the rod and reel. Reel by itself is usually about $ 99.00 when not on sale.

Cabela's has a Lew's Laser Pro combo on sale for $99 right now (normally $199). I've not used this particular set up but have been very happy with Lew's reels so far.

I also just purchased a left hand Cabela's Arachnid (made by Daiwa) that was on sale for $109, normally $169. This reel feels even more sturdy than a Daiwa Tatula that I have used and been happy with.

Abu Garcia Black Max

Nothing wrong with those reels you've mentioned, but also take a look at these reels. The Black Max reels have been providing anglers with quality fishing performance for years, and there are no signs of them stopping! This reel has everything that you'll ever need in a quality reel, and it's only $49.99! That's a great deal and you can't go wrong with this reel. I've used them myself and never had a problem!

For shelf price, Academy is usually cheaper. The deals at BPS and Cabelas can be pretty good. They only advertise through the circular SOME of their deals. There are always quite a few combos that are decent deals. You just have to walk-in and see.

Abu Garcia does make good entry-level combos... Black is decent, silver is better, pro is pretty good...

However, those Lews combos are good quality, and at $99, go for it!

Mettle for under $100 and lews speed spool lfs for 100. The tatula reels are awesome but imo from actual use they are wide for my hand. The lews however fits well for me maybe smaller for most.

I like an ABU Garcia Revo SX little higher about $160 ($120 on amazon). I have several and like them real well. I use 10-12lb fluorocarbon line most of the time. They seem to last with a few drops of oil once in a while. Even have an easy access to oil them. I have one on a ducket rod, a couple on Berkley lightning rods, and a couple on ABU rods.
More like $200-$250 if your going to rig up from Academy.
