Sunfish usually spawn in water between 64 and 72 degrees. The males will move in first and prepare the nest to attract the females. Usually shallow water between 3 to 6 feet deep with gravel, sand,or smi-hard mud bottoms are preferred. Spawn is taking place in some waters here in the San Antonio area. I have seen sunnies on beds.

In North Texas, Texarkana included, they will usually start to spawn in late May and early June and spawn throughout the summer into September.

Seen some also on beds. River fishing has slowed down some due to all the past heavy rain. Got a feeling full blown spawn will take place in a a week or two. Water temperature on the east side of the Guadalupe River was 65 degrees. Also a strong current.

Last year there were still plenty on beds in August here in Dallas. It really goes for several months, like the catfish.

Yes Sir sunnies will spawn two to three times a year starting in late April/Early May all the way to October. With most water bodies in great shape this should be a super spawn.

They definitely are starting in the DFW area. Checked out a couple of the ponds a couple of times and I caught a few bigger ones that were shallow. Bad news is that I've cracked both the front and rear facing cameras on my phone making for terrible pics.

Beginning to pair up, but no active spawn yet on the lakes I frequent...

Couple of ponds i pull monster greenies in Las Colinas, beds have been highly visible for last couple weeks. At Bachman recently producing some quality bluegills, the males are in thick, bull bluegills, and very active bite. Haven't seen beds there yet, but they are starting to bunch up to start fanning beds, so with lots of 80 degree weather ahead, it's about to be on! Pretty darn good right now.

Does the Red Ear do like a blue gill and most spawn on the full moon?

The red ear does spawn with the bluegill on the first wave in May. However in lakes with a good population they will spawn earlier if the conditions are right. The full moon in April has been my best month on Caddo but only if its been warm enough. Also they typically only spawn once a year unlike the Bluegill which will go each month in summer till fall. They are a different fish from the Bluegill. They tend to hang out deeper and have a different diet. Many folks claim their lakes have declining populations of red ear. This could be true since their reproduction is slower and most folks tend to keep the largest and too many fish when it comes to bream fishing. But in most cases you have to fish differently to find them. I do better on deep slow moving jigs with a creature type lure vs. live bait after the spawn.

Side Note: 95 percent of the time is use night crawlers instead of artificial.

Thanks for all the responses folks.I found some nice Redear and Bluegills in the 9" range side by side in 2.5'-3' water using black plastic stonefly nymphs on a 1/32 green chartreuse jig head under the EagleClaw 7/8" slip cork,on a 7' crappie rod. Sure was fun!
