I'm taking a vacation to Port A from the 12th to the 18th. I haven't been to the coast for about 8 years. I have surf tackle as well as regular fishing gear. I would like any advice of where to fish and what to fish with to pretty much catch anything. I dont even know what is down there at the moment.

Will you have a boat or yak?

I don't have a boat, and I'm not going to be able to bring my kayak. I am pretty much limited to the jetties, peirs, beaches, and bays. But I'm willing to drive to another beach close by if that would improve my luck!

You have plenty of options. Of course, the weather conditions will dictate a great deal.

If you want to fish from the jetties, I would recommend taking the jetty boat and cross the channel to the N Jetty. Fish the surf side for trout, reds, drum, sheepshead and flounder using lighter tackle. I would use live shrimp either free-lined or under a popping cork. No live shrimp? Use soft plastics like jig heads with Norton Sand Eels, H&H Cocahoes, or similar. Also topwaters such as Zara Spooks or Skitterwalks can be effective if you have calmer conditions. You do not need to go way down the jetty. Flounder and trout especially can be found in shallow surf. Trout have been biting along with flounder stacked up near the beach in shallow water near the rocks. The S Jetty can produce as well, but I believe the N Jetty is superior.

You can also use your surf fishing gear to fish the surf from Horace Caldwell pier, or anywhere down Mustang Island where you can drive. A fish finder rig baited with a live finger mullet on a 5/0 circle hook or larger can get you big trout, bull redfish, big jacks and several other species. Cast into the second gut, go back to the beach, place your rod in a sand spike, and have a cold one while you wait. You can also fish with lighter tackle with the aforementioned options as well. Use a double drop rig baited with dead shrimp on a no. 1 or 2 hook, or Fish Bites for whiting, which are delicious panfish. They frequently bite willingly, and you might be able to fill an cooler with them if nothing else cooperates.

Airport flats in Copano Bay has been good for me for wade fishing. You can drive up, park and walk 100 yards to shell, grass and hard sand. It's just north of the airport once you cross over the bridge(2nd turn to the right by the airport).
