Hey guys, i went to a local pond for couple of hours with a simple setup. small hook, carolina rig and bread. but no bite. i know there are carps in the pond. i looked up internet, and saw that rigs for carp fishing looks relatively complicated and you don't actually put the bait on a hook. I mean, i can't get a bite with just simple carolina rig with corn or bread on a actual hook? do you need that specific setup?

A carolina rig baited with corn works quite well for carp.

try a drop of vanilla extract on the bread ball.
also use smaller leader, mainline and weight. im personally using white colored 6# fireline for them with no leader and the smallest split shot i can get away with. i tried to fish justa little a heavier a few days ago and it halfed my bites

Thanks for the tip gentlemen. That helps alot. i'll downsize leader and weight. for my bread dough, i mixed with resberry jam, walmart bread, and flour. I'll get some corns as well.

I think you are going about it the wrong way,I use at least a size 8 hook,on a hair rig,a short hooklength of around 6-8",and a semi fixed lead of at least 2oz,this is called a bolt rig,the carp feels the weight of the lead,bolts and hooks its self,It's the simplest form of carp rig thats been used in Uk for over 30 years,there are plenty of more complicated rigs for use on waters that are heavily fished for carp,and the fish learn how to avoid being hooked,but here ,they aren't fished for as much and usually the rig ive suggested will work.If you need a photo of the way to set it up I can send you one

went for an hour and churm the area with corns. something pulled my line, i thought it was a baby carp as it was pulling pretty good, but instead, it was this huge blue gill. picture doesn't do the justice.

how long does it take carps to show up normally after you chum the area?

thanks for the tip derek, but that hair rig is what i opt out to use. that's a bit complicate for me. i would rather put the bait on the hook if it works. zeek mentioned that carolia rig should also work.

I just started carp fishing this year so I am no expert but here is what I have learned.

I take bread and add vanilla protein powder and water and kneed until a sticky dough. i use a Carolina rig with a 1/2oz weight and a tiny bait holder hook and I cut a piece of ballpoint pen spring and slid it on the hook to hold the dough.

I do not know if this is preferred by real carp fishermen but I use 30# power pro braid for the main line and leader. I cast it out, set the rod on stick to prop it up then I take the slack and pull it between the top and second eye on the rod and I hang a little stick from it so the slack is held down by the weight of the stick between the eyes. the stick will go up and down just a little as the carp or buffalo sucks on the bait but when it goes up I set the hook as they have taken the bait and are swimming away. I miss many but I get a lot too.

this is the technique I use, again I am a rank beginner. I am sure there are far better ways to do it.

hair rigs are super easy to tie and have a better hook up ratio vs hooks with bait directly on them. It is worth looking into.

Here is a dumb video of how I do it in my kitchen. It is not the right way but it does function (unless there is a lot of wind) I know you know what a carolina rig is. I suppose it is harder to visualize the stick.

i didn't expect you to go through the hassle of making that video, but i really appreciate that. i think that idea is very savvy and innovative. i think mike doran can appreciate your idea as well since monitoring stick should be a lot easier on your eyes than watching thin line. i'll definitely apply that into my carp fishing next time. thanks again.

Last Saturday night I took my 13 year old daughter to the LL Fishing Barge and she caught 2 buffs. One was 5 lbs and the next went 7 lbs. Both caught on a carolina rig with a circle hook. Worms for bait. She had a blast!
