I was thinking, I have a large grass carp I've tracking for three weeks now I know it's the same one, distinctive marking one side. I have thrown everything, nothing. I was wondering if I take my vise and tie a fly out of rye grass, that's what it's eating. Yes or no or do something different?

I hooked a big one on a little all black #8 gurgler; fought it for over an hour and lost it at the yak; put my cabela's boga grip on its bottom lip and all hell broke loose; had to let it go or go into the lake with it.-p-

The mulberry is awesome. I did it in Kansas. Small park northwest of Newton Ks. Made almost the same flys,had to quit because I got tired. Don't have any mulberry trees here, just cottonwoods,looked like snow last week. Appreciate the help. I may go later today and tie a few and see what happens, I know it's going to be a one shot one deal with this fly.I'll post pics if I'm lucky.

Matching the hatch has worked for me. I once caught several riding under a budding tree by matching the buds to a fly in my box, in the case a size 14 bead head Crackleback.

Thanks for the input.Nothing but oaks cottonwood trees. When the water went up a couple of weeks ago they were eating cattail shoots,now it's rye grass, turning sideways and going like a mower. How do match the hatch on that?

don't the cottonwood trees have seeds that drop in the water; seems I remember Longhaired Dave having a fly that imitated a cottonwood seed-p-

Years ago, I read about some guys on Sam Rayburn Lake (?) who found a location next to a golf course, where the grounds keepers daily cut the grass, throwing some into the lake.

These flyfishers brought their own grass clippings from home and chummed up the White Amur. When the carp were "munching down", they were fed "St. Augustine" flies, which were just untrimmed, balls of green deerhair...

You've figured out the first step, which is what they're feeding on. Imitating grass with green foam strips or twist-ties, or deer hair does work, but is by no means consistent. Of course, if they were easy to catch, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

P.S. - Mulberries are carp crack, but I've only ever seen a single mulberry tree hanging out over a river here in Texas. Not like in Kansas - I wrote an article about the fantastic carping under the mulberry trees a couple years ago.
