Hey guys, I was thinking about fishing from the bank down below the Texoma Dam, but closer to Shawnee Creek to hopefully get away from the crowds. I was considering cut bait that I will just purchase from the Asian market. Any pointers on how I should set up? Bottom fishing (basic carolina rig) or should I consider a 3 way swivel instead?

Has anyone fished down there recently with any luck on cats? I would think with this being a flowing river now some big cats would be in the area feeding. I may have my daughter set up with a bobber and worms to possibly catch some live bait.

Any pointers or suggestions for this area would be appreciated. Or if you know a tailrace closer to DFW area that may produce. My daughter is 13 and has chosen this year to seek large fish (carp/catfish) over bass fishing.

Thanks!

You probably need wire sinker to hold your bait in place, Big Sam's buddy 7777 is an expert on dam fishing if they didn't see this you might to send either one of them a pm... Their are big cats over there for sure, bring a net to catch gizzard shad, but please be very careful with your little girl, the current can be dangerous.

Why do I go fishing? To catch a box of fish and/or some quality time under the sun. Thank Heaven I never fail fishing in Texas, catching box fish or plenty of sunburn.

I haven't personally fished it but my grandpop lives down by there and used to fish it regularly before he had to sell his fishing gear to pay the bills frown but when he did fish there he would buy some maybe dough bait I think? Anyway he bought some from his old friend who owns a bait shop and would always catch monsters out of it. I remember before I even got into fishing watching him catch them as a kid. Good times. I hope you have some success there!

I would watch him catch them while I was a kid and he used the dough bait to catch monsters out of the river. My bad I'm tired hahaha

OK 7777 took a picture of how we rig for swift water below the dam
You'll have to zoom in on your computer to see the rig good

Excellent, thanks!! I plan to fish a little more of the slack water vs the swift areas. However I think this rig will work great on the area lakes that have deep grass too. Keep the bait just above the grass line.

If your fishing slack water or grass, switch the claw sinker with a regular bank sinker. You can also use a regular bank sinker, throw up by the dam and let it bump along the bottom as the current brings it out.

Another deadly method is using a big slip cork rig.

Use tough baits like heads or fillets when fishing current.

Yes, planned on that. Figured I would buy some big baits at the Asian market for back up if I can't catch any large shad.

Be careful what you buy from the asian market, some of what they have is considered game fish and is not legal to use for bait. I know the mackerel they sell you can't use.

Doug, camo hat with velcro patches, ugly stik gear bag.

Great advices 7777, thanks for helping out fellow anglers thumb

JJ4MEL, get buffalo fish whole ask them to remove scales but do not wash, put it in a plastic bag and on ice until you need to use it. Have some extra money left? then buy some live crawfish to put in your icebox. Pinch the head off and peel shells off and put on a hook then throw it in the water, see what will bit. Hank on to the pole.

Thanks BankAngler50! I catch my own crawfish at a local pond. I can normally get a dozen within 30 minutes.

I'm still trying to figure out how to tie that hook on the line the way it is shown in the photo. That's a sweet set up I would like to use.

You're welcome JJ4MEL cheers search "twisted Paternoster fishing rig " on YouTube. It's really good rig for lake fishing too, I used it for years until I got lazy and found a three way swivels on Amazon.com that doesn't cut my line. If you like I can send you some to use until you figure out how to tie twisted Paternoster knot. Good luck hope you have great time at red river.
