I was wondering what is the pros/cons for using jigs with sickle hooks? is it better for hook set ? or less hang ups or what ?
Thanks Love TFF !

Sickle hooks are a heck of a lot sharper than a regular hook, I don't see any downside to them other than you can't bend them out if you get hung up

Thank you Mr.Nick ! I found that out pretty quick and breaking off. I guess I overlooked sharpness.

I use them both...like the round bend when fishing lighter mono over brushpile so...or in really heavy brush with mono...like the sickles most any other time, although I normally weaken the hook at the bend closes to the lead head...

I agree with Mckinney, Sickles also seem to have a wider gap which seems to help with hook-ups. I use regular bend when I get hung up alot, just as Crapicat said. I agree with them both. Regular bend are cheaper.
I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

used round bend hooks for 30 years, now i dont have one in my box.i tried the sickle hook and never went back to round bend.i found the hook up ratio was much greater with the sickle hook.only con iv found is on some the barbs are too small.i like the Matuo red works great for me!

Sickle hooks are the only hooks that I will use for the rest of my life. Fish stay hooked a lot better. Never know when that 3 pounder will jump on there and I want the best hook possible on when that happens.

Sickle hooks are a heck of a lot sharper than a regular hook, I don't see any downside to them other than you can't bend them out if you get hung up I've found the Black hooks break and the bronze is bendable probably about 5-6 times and then will break.

I don't use Matzuo's sickle hook and here is why. They are made in China and a couple of years ago fell behind and did not keep up sales here the states. Korea is making some of the hooks now but marking them made in China. They do use a smaller wire and that is why they are sharper. But they do dull fast. The sickle is a short Shank, wide gap hook, and the only one like that made in the states that I know of Eagle Claw there's is the Lil' Nasty. They are both made with cheap wire and have all of the small problems. The jig hooks made in the USA are sharp enough that when you pick up the rod you hook the fish. So why would I need one that is sharper than that. On the sickle hook the first bend coming off of the shank is called the strength bend and the only place these hooks can be bend back shape. Matzuo claims these hooks can be put back 3 times before they are to weak to fish with.

I tend to get hung up more when using sickle hooks. The way I address this issue is to use as small a hook as the bait will allow me to fish.....I specifically like the # 6 bronze when using Thermocline Lil Frys and bronze #4 when using larger profile baits...anything bigger will stay hung up most of the time...I use the bronze because out of all of them, they seem to bend more times than the others...after I have weakened the hooks. #2s and larger are just a break off waiting to happen...
