You won't be able to keep shad alive for more than 20-30 minutes. You can only keep about a dozen in a 5 gallon bucket. I recommend not using ice because it will cause them to be shocked whenever they go back in the warm creek water. Best way to do it is net you a dozen or so lively shad, and drop them in a 5 gallon aerated bucket, wait 5 minutes for them to let off the stress ammonia and scales and stuff, dump the shad in to a net, then put them in a second aerorated bucket with fresh water. I do suggest keeping them in the shade, repeat after you use your dozen shad or they die.
