New to Falcon Reservoir fishing. Would like to take out my 14 ft jon boat and 5 hp motor. Any tips on where to launch or where to fish would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When it gets really hot summer time weather is the best time. Go up the river as far as you can get. You will see some of the bigger ones up there on the surface gulping for air as the oxygen levels are low.

Don't let anybody wave you down, ignore them and get the heck out of there. Do not take that little boat anywheres near the Mexico side of the lake.
And surely you know this; but that lake gets rough as hell with even a puff of wind.

If your bow fishing I saw quite a few boats in good bay a while back. You can launch in Tigers to hugest there and stay out of the elements for the most part.

Hello. Thank you for your response to my post. Where is Tiger and the Good bay area you saw the bowfisherman? I ended up launching from the state park and went towards the dam and fished to the left of it in some coves. I caught a longnose gar and a good sized blue cat on cut mullet. Not quite the alligator gar I was after but it was fun and a learning experience.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind. I was warned about the wind and warned again when launching at the boat ramp. Wind conditions were not bad and water was pretty slick early in day.

Not sure how far I would need to travel up River or what would be safe in smaller boat but It would be nice to find some creeks or brushy/branchy areas to fish. Dried up small limb tree areas.

Launch @ Becon. As far up lake as I know of a ramp. Head right/north and the river kind of starts short distance from there. During lower levels it is the river. I have seen them pretty much everywhere during warmer months. Dam to the river. Do agree that Tigers will keep your smaller boat off the main lake. You can also unload @ county ramp & go left instead of out onto main lake. Kill em all!

If anyone would like to send me google map pins to my cell phone I would most greatly appreciate it. I will do my part to balance the gar population so that other fish may thrive.

Maps to small on my phone. Go to Google Maps. Put it on satellite & you can see everything. In Zapata the county ramp is in the back of a neighborhood on the north side of bridge over an arm called the Valeno. The Becon Lodge is on Becon Lodge Circle off Catfish Circle. Area called Falcon Mesa. "Suburb" of Zapata. :-) It puts you in a little up stream from the county ramp. If you follow 83 south Tiger will be the bridge that crosses over the upper cove a little over 1/2 way to the dam. There is a small ramp in a creek off the river north of town on the left as you are heading south on 83 before reaching Zapata but I'm pretty sure it's open only when the lake is close to full. Maybe someone will chime in on some info about this other upriver ramp. You can see all this stuff on Google Maps. Go talk to James @ Falcon Lake Tackle. Wealth of information. He hates gar too!
