I have a black and red boat. It shows white or silver through the scratches. Dark colors draw heat and are hot in the Texas summers and I have had the plastic wire coatings melt around the TM when covered in the summer. I would go with white and some other color where the dark color wouldn't show scratches.

Black is by far the highest amount of trouble to keep up with, it's the prettiest when it's new and shiny, but the nastiest when it's dirty and scratched.
I'll NEVER own another black boat.

White gel as the primary color. Does not really show scratches and when you do scratch it, they can be buffed out easily. Just a classic look and is much cooler in the Texas sun.

i've owned a black champion w/ green flake and pins. spent hours upon hours on the deck and never noticed it was "hotter" than any other boats. now the black seats, yes, they will burn your bottom when you sit down. i've had white boats also, they all showed the dirt after fishing which i didn't like. same problem with the seats, the darker seat burned ya some.
ideal boat for me nowadays. black boat, with purple pins, and white seats, and purple strips. probably gray carpet(not sure) that would look really cool.

Danny, here is a shot of my Skeeter it's a 95 model. Just keep it out of the direct sunlight when not on the water and it will help the gelcoat stand the test of time.

Texas sun will ruin any color gel coat if it is not cared for. Remember- there are two kinds of dirt in this world 1)dark dirt that shows up on light gel 2) light dirt that shows up on dark gel. To keep from chalking gel coat MUST be waxed with good wax frequently, every 3 months should do the trick. White does have the rep. for lasting longer but in most cases that is only because chalking is not noticable on white untill it is very sun burnt (chalking is mostly white)If you want to go the extra mile you can buff your boat at the end of the season but that will slowly remove thin layers of gel coat, so if you go that way use the least agresive compound that will do the job well. Pat Goff is waaaayyyyy right about black, it even tends to show swirl marks badly after a buff even with fine grits

I read a study in Boat Dealers mag. a few years ago about what was the best color to go with. It said that a metalflake boat no mater what color deteriated quicker than a color gel coated boat for this reason. The metal flake amplified the UV rays that litterly burned the clear coat away. The solid colors lasted much longer because of this. It also said that the darker colors in metal flake also retained more heat than the lighter colors. We did a temp test with a new Snap-on laser gun in my parking lot and the darker colors were from 20 to 70 degrees hotter than the white........FYI
