I need some advice on how and where to set out some christmas trees. Should I put each tree in a 5 gallon bucket with concrete or is there a better way to sink them? What area of the lake and what depths should I concentrate on? I've got about 8 trees. Thanks

there are a bunch of different ways to sink trees and there is not many wrong ways. If it were me and I only had 8 christmas trees to use I would probably do it like this.
Put each tree base in a bucket & fill it with concrete. I would then drop each tree about 6-8ft apart in a big square or circle. I would plan on putting the trees on a small point or an area with a good drop off. I would suggest about 14-16ft deep for lakes that are fairly murky and about 20-24ft deep for clearer water lakes. These depths should hold fish for about 6-8 months out of the year. Good Luck
If that is what I had to work with thats how I would do it.

Christmas trees are less than ideal for attractors. Some feel the tight branches and pitch are the big negative. I have done my own tests and found them not very good other than making a good bondfire. I live on a 20 acre private lake that have been putting attractors out for 16 years. Almost anything is better that something from the evergreen family in my experiance. In a nutshell, hardwood is best. Clip off all of the small limbs less than 1/8 inch in diam. Use a one gallon jug attached to the top to keep it upright and make it more usefull year round. Search Crappie condos on google for other ideas. I hate to see someone waste the effort, money, and fishing time when the results could be more productive. Hope you find this helpful. Don

I have always had great success in the past with christmas trees. They've proved well for attracting crappie as well as largemouth bass. We'd typically tie 3 or 4 trees toghether at the bases and use cinder blocks to sink em. The way I see it, if you put 'something' in there it's probably better than nothin....

Christmas trees on my lake will attract only after several/many months with they become covered with algee to the point of being almost solid. Much like a log on the bottom. I didn't say it would not work but I believe time could be better spent. It's better than nothing I guess.
Yes I live about 10 minutes from Cross lake and usually fish it after work. Since quiting work to fish full time, it seems I always drive to the bigger impounds now. The reports on Cross have not been good yet but I have a feeling the new moon this weekend is going to change all that. I pretty sure a good fisherman could get on some fish real soon on Cross.
I'd love to go try 'em but I'm booked on Toledo this weekend. Its gonna be tuff too. Seeya, Don
