How many cfs's would be too much for fishing? I wanted to go this Saturday, but looks like it may have to be a lake trip. I'd just like to know what I'm looking at as far as water numbers. Thanks!

Anything over 300 or so will be difficult. Normal flow is around 150. Right now a flood gate is open. You can fish the bank next to the dam but it will pretty much be your only option

Would it be safe to just kayak the river? I just got an ascend fs12 t and if anything I'd like to run it down the river, unless it's not safe.

I've run the river with several flood gates open. Bra and the game wardens will try to encourage you not to but they can't stop you from doing it. I personally would not do it if you are not experienced in a kayak. There will be log jams and snags that you have to negotiate as well as rough water and currents. You will be on your own if you get hurt.
It took us under 4 hrs to make the 20 mile trip to hwy 4

DO NOT go to the river right now! Below PK and Whitney it is flow close to 10,000 cubic feet per second. Imagine a 10,000 cubic foot wall moving by every second. cfs-A unit expressing the rate of discharge (or rate of flow) of water. One cubic foot per second is equal to the discharge through a rectangular cross-section one foot wide and one foot high, flowing at an average velocity of one foot per second. One cubic foot per second equals 448.8 gallons per minute, and 1.98 acre-feet per day. I'm an experienced kayaker and have gotten caught in 5,000 below Whitney and it was the hardest paddle I've every done. An inexperienced paddler will get swept down river. The banks at 5,000 are steeper and covered with trees but 10,000 puts it way up in the trees. Tree branches become sweepers that will sweep you right off your kayak. Take your new kayak to the lake and get to know it. The rivers will come back down soon but even then Below Whitney is not a good place until they get some type of schedule for releasing.

Much good advice dispensed above. After all the rain we got this week, I'd hold off on the Brazos for a while. When you do go, if its your first time on that stretch of river, I recommend you find someone with more experience to go with. You can also hire a guide, which is your best bet for a successful (i.e., fishy) and safe trip.

Good advice up above about not getting on the river right now. It's running about 8,000 cfs below PK dam and about 28,000 cfs (which is full-on raging flood stage) just above Granbury. The advice about 150 cfs is spot on.
Just for perspective, I was up on the upper mountain fork last weekend with some guys. we were floating and fishing in canoes. The river was at 400 cfs. I dumped it once, and the other two canoes dumped it at least once each. We lost a some gear, including my brand-new spinning rod I had just built. Two guys did get into a dicey situation once when they tangled with a tree. Everybody came home intact with no injuries and just injured pride, but there was one close call.
There is absolutely no way I would get on the Brazos right now. Canoe, kayak, raft, whatever - no way.

Thank you everyone for chipping in good info. What if one were to do a trip up River from Waco? How far up could you go before the current got too strong. I plan on waiting myself, but I am just curious what the conditions are like. And I would be going in a little 12 ft John boat myself with a 2 hp outboard. Been wanting to explore the Brazos for a while now.... Stupid work though -.-
