Looking to retire to the lake and have heard that there were problems with regard to the county services and taxes around the lake. Please fill me in from first hand knowledge only. Thanks.

(1) That's a pretty broad statement and request. Why don't you narrow it down to a/some specific questions. (2) There are the better part of three counties involved: primarily Wood, some Rains and a little Hopkins. Any idea which you're considering?

I have a home on the lake in Wood County. Appraised values are very reasonable, significantly below market in my case. Water is via speciall utility district, electricity is Wood County Co-op and have trash pickup provider. Fire protection is Alba volunteer fire department. All services are as good as you will get in a metropolitan area.

Wood County elec. co-op is great...much better than Oncor in this area. Yantis volunteer Fire Department do a fine job. Gman

I had a waterfront home in Wood County. All services were very good and taxes were low.

It seems I saw a post a few weeks back concerning either Raines or Wood county from several property owners with negative comments regarding one of the counties and steering potential buyers to the other. These comments were do to negative feelings towards the county not doing a great job vs the taxes and fees being collected in their opinion (and/or the difference in taxes between the two counties) if I remember the post correctly.....just can't locate the post. In all my travels to Fork over the years I've loved the area and surely the taxes must be a lot lower than the Metromess.
