I snagged one of those things back in the early 80's while fishing for cats on the Mississippi river up in Minnesota. I was fishing with a zebco 808 reel and rod combo with 20lb line. I thought I was snagged on a log until my line began moving upstream. That sucker was huge, at least 50 or 60lbs if not bigger? He had a thick mat of moss growing on his back. That old man was not happy and that's putting mildly. I cut the line after I got him into shallow enough water to take a good look at him. It was a thrill, but scary! I've heard stories about people killing them for food and finding Indian flintstone arrowheads and civil war musket balls lodged inside them. a couple of years ago some Mississippi hunters shot and killed a 910 pound alligator. Nine of the wounds on the animal are believed to have been caused by Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket,suggesting that the reptile could have possibly been used as a target for shooting practice by Confederate troops. The huge animal also bore five other bullet wounds from three different calibers of hunting rifles. This unique specimen was estimated to have been 185 years old at the time of its death. The heaviest ever recorded, weighed in at a staggering 1,011.5 lbs, was pulled out of a river in Alabama in August of last year. I hope you do release them. They are on the endangered species list.
Snowflakes and entitled brats will be the doom of America!

I seen a snapper a couple years ago in a ditch walking upw to the road. Figuring he would be road kill soon I turned the truck around and relocated him to a creek not far away. Guessing it was 20-25lbs. Man,got to respect them for their age and nasty mouth. Seen him once in that creek after that. Makes you happy knowing you may have saved something special and rare. I'm far from a tree hugger but respect nature always. and like dancing bananas

Those alligator turtles are dangerous. It wouldn't take much to lose a finger or two. Those are the biggest ones I've ever seen. I steer clear of them when i can. It's been a while since I've seen one. thanks for all the pics.
Shut up and fish!

Caught this bad boy in the Trinity in Arlington a few years ago. It was a monster. That is a size 12 boot in the second pic for reference. We never got it all the way out of the water.

No turtles were harmed in the making of that photo. I, on the other hand, almost sustained a hand amputation. He was not happy with me.
