The way it was explained to me was, If they do spawn, the results would be either a pure striper or a pure sandbass, but not a hybrid because a hybrid has to be made by biologists in the lab. Don't know if its true or not. Slept through biology did ya? If two hybrids successfully spawn their offspring would be hybrids. That's simple biology.

A tpwd person told me maybe 1 in 10 thousands males were not sterile, and that they would revert to sand bass or stripers. He said he thinks that's how the sand bass got into lake Palestine . Just his opinion!

Just his opinion! I suppose it's kinda like Hybrid Bluegill turning back to Warmouths after a couple of generations? It sounds logical, at least to me.

Really it's all about numbers. They call hybrids "functionally sterile" meaning the chance of them producing viable offspring is very low. However when you put 500,000 or so Palmetto Hybrids, mix in a 100,000 or so sunshine hybrids, then account for the millions of native white bass, and for good measure throw in a few yellow bass. Some crazy things can happen. There is no doubt that some hybrid genetics are present in the lakes I fish that were not a result of direct stocking.Every year I catch at least one hybrid x yellow bass cross. Those almost have to come from in lake reproduction. I do believe the numbers that carry out successful reproduction are very low. Statistically insignificant. But it is fun to talk about. It's a neat science experiment at the very least.

Throwing in my two cents - they are reproducing in Cedar Creek - not sure if hybrid to hybrid or hybrid to white bass, but its happening... spawn just like all other fish ... caught several females that proved it to me as well as hybrids that just weren't the right size ... just like the dinosaurs couldn't reproduce in the first Jurassic Park movie...

Given enough time, there could be striper DNA in all the white bass. What would a white bass that's 1/16 striper look like? Probably a white bass with an unusual amount of broken lines. Lakes are full of those.
As for white x yellow, they even have a record category for white x yellow hybrids now. I wonder what percentage counts (only 50/50?) and how they even determine that.

I got one on Cedar Creek a few weeks ago that had to be a hybrid/yellow cross. Really deep, really thick but with a definite yellow tint to it.

Can anyone explain the broken lines ? I could be wrong , but I grew up catching sandbass at Texoma , no broken lines. I started fishing for stripers at Texoma in the late 70's, I recall no broken lines ever until hybrids were introduced . Now, I see whites , stripers and hybrids with broken lines. Hybridization or inbreeding ?

MO I'm convinced it happens. I have a suspicion that the 1/4 breeds reproduce much more easily back with the others of their 3/4 kind. "Functionally sterile" means not really sterile, I guess.

Was doing a little more reading on this yesterday. Maryland and Virginia have stopped stocking hybrids in areas that have drainage to the coast. They want to prevent hybrids from breeding back with stripers and diluting the native striper DNA with white bass genes.

They want to prevent hybrids from breeding back with stripers and diluting the native striper DNA with white bass genes. Good research. And that's exactly why TP&W refuses to stock hybrids or allow the private stocking of hybrids on Lake Livingston. Their state wide stocking program depends on those pure strain stripers below the dam...and some biologists believe there is possibly DNA strains of the expired Gulf striped bass that was part of a strong commercial fishing program back in the day. Livingston would be the absolute perfect hybrid lake but it will never happen. Hybrids have been known to have very limited repro for many years, nothing new here.
