Good reel for the money. They are smaller than a 5500,nothing fancy, easy to repair.I use mine to throw crankbaits for bass. They can take a beating and keep on ticking.

Start early, stay late and keep your plug in the water.

That is the exact reel i started out on. Very forgiving. I still have it i just need a new worm gear for it(took it saltwater fishing and messed up the gear). If you have a bigger thumb go to a bigger abu.

They have changed some since I used them. The reel is the same in diameter to a 5500 but narrower. It casts better than the 5500 and they are very tough reels. The newer (last 15 years is new to me) reels have the ultracast which makes them a good pitching reel too.

Can't go wrong with an Abu. I started on them as well & still use two of the 4600's (one for cranks Sml Diamtr Spool & one for jigs Lrg Diamtr Spool.)

Another exciting innovation in the Abu line, they just came out with a low profile reel that is supposed to be the bees knees.

You can't go wrong with them & they are fairly easy to clean compared to most.

I used the 4500 and 4600 series reels from the time I started getting serious about bass fishing (around 1975) up until last year when I tried out the new Curado 200DHSV... Now I've switched out most of my 4500 & 4600s for the Curado.

Like the other's said, these are some tough reels. The older 4500C didn't have instant anti-reverse so that was a welcome change when the 4600C came out. I even bought several 4500CS's that were basically 4500C's with instant anti-reverse... they're heavier than the 4600C, but IMHO, they're sturdier and much smoother.

Wal Mart sold a gold 4600C that wasn't quite as smooth as the 4600C3 or 4600C4 but for the price, they were very good reels.

If you have small hands, you might want to check out a low profile reel as the 4600C series is a full size "round" reel.

Regardless of which 4600 series reel you choose, you'll have a hard time finding a better reel for the price...

I love the Abu's! My dad has 2 4600's from about 15 years ago that still work fine (small repairs along the way of course). I recently bought one that has worked perfectly for what I use them for. I also bought a Shimano Citica and I feel that the 4600 is better. Good luck with your choice.
