How can you diagnose if the trim gauge is broke or the trim sensor. I talked to a guy and he said to ground out the sensor and see if the gauge jumps. I tried not sure if I did it correctly. I'd hate to just buy parts not knowing if I'm replacing something that works. Any help will be appreciated.

Does it not work at all? I know on the merc optimax there is a "plug" that can easily come disconnected while taking on and off the cowling, its' a super easy fix. Just plug the connection back together.
Not sure what you have...but I'd guess its' an easy fix. Good luck!

2005 merc optimax . I traced the wire from the sensor to under the cowling. It all seems to be connected

You should be able to find a bullet connector under the cowling, unplug and ground this wire, harness side, turn ign key on and gauge should go full up if gauge is good. If gauge does show full up the trim sender switch is bad. Get it here: http://www.boats.net/

Ok. I didn't turn the ignition on. I'll try that and report back. Thanks for your responses.

Well I guess it's the gauge itself. I pulled the bullet connector off grounded it and nothing on the gauge. That means it's the gauge correct?

The gauge, a connection at the gauge or a plug connection in the instrument wiring harness.
