From what I've seen/heard Lowrance has better 2d, bird has better si and di. Of course fine tuning makes a difference and YMMV BINGO!!

How come only Wayne can manage to post pics? I want to see how much better your SI is than mine because; because I have Lowrance graphs and they must really suck badly... I'll post pics after you guys do. Wayne, I've seen your pics so you're not invited to play with us.

I used a 998 and 958 for 3 years, moved to two HDS 12's, to me, and I am not starting any drama, there is no comparison between the two brands, 2D, DI & SI are all so much better on the Lowrance units to me... I have the point 1 antenna for GPS, it doesn't get any better than that and my maps don't lag, I'm running Navionics Platinum, like them a ton better than my lakemaster chips in my birds... Just my .02

The data overlay is so much better than the fixed [censored] on my birds was, so much customization there.

As usual... All these guys say how great their graphs are; but yet they won't post any of their pics.

You know there have been several of these threads and I kind of unintentionally started one myself. Why don't some of the die hard brand loyalists go over the same structure on the same lake then post pics. Maybe go from waypoint to waypoint over known cover. Then have the garmin, lowrance, and humminbird boys post pics up here for the everyone to decide for themselves.

The fact that the bird could shoot shallower was a big deal for me but I also got a heck of a deal on the unit which factored into finally pulling the trigger. Regardless of brand, if you don't spend time using it and figuring it out - it's just a high priced paperweight.

[quote=klockness] Regardless of brand, if you don't spend time using it and figuring it out - it's just a high priced paperweight. Exactly! I bet 90% of these guys who claim that their graphs are better only say that because they hear others here say how brand Y is better than brand X. I'm still waiting for all of these awesome bird images. (Wayne still doesn't count)

here's a pretty good image that I got the other day, something to consider is I have only 3 outings on this new unit and its the first SI DI unit I have ever had so that being said I am far from a pro but I feel like this 999 has been very simple to operate and get good results from and nothing compares to the onix snapshots I have seen

I'm not dogging my birds, for the money they did the job, just not comparable to hds units... I have no helix experience, and I'll be first to admit the garmin units look real legit in demo mode.

Humminbird over Lowrance hands down! I have owned and used a variety of both brands and various units over the past 10+ years. Lowrance makes a good product but is much harder to use compared to Humminbird Units and the Lowrance SI is nearly useless compared to Humminbirds SI. The SI on a Humminbird unit shows so much more clarity and detail! Side Imaging is how I locate 90% of my bass offshore, it is an invaluable tool for finding fish and fish holding structure/cover quicker. I first see the bass and bait using SI on my Humminbird 1199ci then switch to 2D Sonar and my map. Lowrance does have great Down Imaging (which I could go without as I never personally use DI much at all) and solid 2D sonar but it takes longer to learn how to use and has nearly useless Side Imaging. Go with a Humminbird, you will be glad that you did.
