I was given a Kayak the other day and its a Malibu two ocean kayak, was used 1 time, I have been wanting to get a yak for quite some time but this thing is really big and is not light by any means! is this monster the norm for fishing or do they make more manageable ones that maybe I can trade down to?

I'm asking before I start putting money into a truck bed extender and some kind of roller to move this monster.

any advice would be appreciated.

I looked this up, and it looks like it's 12' and weighs 57 lbs. In that case, it's quite a bit lighter than what most of us use for fishing! 12 to 14' is typical. I would not recommend going with anything shorter.

My fishing yak is 14foot and ways 150 lbs... you got it easy

It is a tandem, so it may paddle like a barge with just one person. Note the maximum weight capacity on that is 375-425 lbs, so I would not put more than 280 lbs of people and gear in it.

It's a very stable, very open, hard to kill Kayak. A tandem as mentioned above but Shane Davies used to paddle one back in the day. I could think of worse first boats.

nice starter yak IMO. ocean makes solid yaks IMO. the OK Malibu II is a 2 seater and stable. its not the most comfy yak but that goes without saying for most older style 2 person kayaks without a high/low seat. it will hold a good amount of gear and is versatile imo. like the others have mentioned its not the fastest or most pleasurable to paddle but, but it will more than get the job done imo. you could likely get $550 plus for it on offer up or CList. paddle it for a while and see if you like the sport then decide how to proceed is my advise. get u a paddlers vest and a decent paddle to help make the experience more pleasurable.

Yes it is a tandem but it is one of the smallest and lightest tandems out there. It is actually lighter than lots of single seaters. Also the Malibu 2 is designed to be paddled either single or double with seat placement. I have paddled one carrying young grand kids and I liked it. Stability is excellent. I am sure it would be a great fishing platform. One of the guides around here used to have one. Great for carrying extra gear. If you are going on lakes I wouldn't recommend anything under 12 foot. Your paddle speed will be directly proportional to length. Also shorter yaks wiggle waggle and don't have much carrying capacity.
