I have never fished with live shad, or dead for that matter. What is the problem with keeping them in the floating minnow buckets? As near as I can tell the only potential problem would be the warmer surface water during the summer.

we are talking 100 + shad here 4 a days fishing, and some guides use 300 or so on a good day, I don't think a floating minnow bucket would work, mike

I saw a round shad live-well made out of a large round trash can with a water pump pumping water in and a outlet hose near the top so it wouldn't overflow. I asked, after watching them real in a hundred or so whites, how many shad he had in and he said about 500.

Estex, Thats has always been a million dollar idea.....if you can invent a system to keep shad alive for more than 3 days you will be a MILLIONAIRE.... That million dollar idea of yours is no longer an idea or wishful thinking; its reality. Its been reality over a decade. I think for someone who is trying to keep shad alive for recreational fishing a 10 gallon Gott water cooler and a portable Keep Alive system would work. I haven't tried this but it seems like an inexpensive way to do a bait tank. Just my 2 cents. Here is a short cut if you would like to see the pump and filter system. http://keepalive.net/portable.htm

hmmm.. after reading that site about oxyedge-chum it makes me think if its not a total marketing scam. I'm not a professinal on the matter of oxygen but I would think that a "home made" version would work just as well....... But Thats Just My thinking.

I agree. A water pump and something round should do the trick.

A "Bud" bucket (ie. 5-7 gal bucket cooler w/insulation) and a good pump works good for me, keeps a good handfull of shad all day.
