Trying to up my game this year. I've been reading and watching videos of people talking about jig color and water color. I can accept that it matters but I can't understand why a darkish jig works better in water that is hard to see in. Why?
I usually use minnows. I've used jigs in the past but not with much success. I usually fish Navarro Mills but I'm going to Bardwell and the marina there. What colors would work best in their water?

Blue and white are good spawn colors
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

The dark jig provides a contrast to the dingy water. The conventional wisdom doesn't always play out for jig colors with crappie. Crappie can be so picky at times that you need to experiment. But I'd say the basic recommendation of bright or dark colors in dingy water and natural colors in clearer water will work the majority of the time.

I fished Bardwell almost exclusively last summer into fall. 99% of the crappie I caught were on the Crappie Magnet, in the salt & pepper color. All came off of brush piles. I have never fished the marina, so no help there. Check out some of my posts from Bardwell. I posted a pic of the jig I use, in one of them. Good Luck

Those marina folks are very helpful over there...just ask them...they know the specifics on that lake and will tell you what you need to know, when you get there...Incidentally, Gaby gave a great answer to your question...Salt and pepper, interesting color...

Thanks guys. Called the marina this afternoon and asked how they were biting. They said it was picking up. Taking the family and a friend of my daughter. I'll be sure and pick up some more jigs while I'm there. I think I've got the Cajun cricket in my tackle box. How often should I change jigs?

I would put something different on each pole and see what they will bite. JMHO. Good luck!

Black/char, Black gum, and Blue Thunder have all served me well at the Marina. If people are catching fish ask them what they are using, Most people their are friendly and will disclose what they are using.

I went yesterday. Things were really slow for everyone. Most of the fish yesterday were caught on "suicide" made by Lilypad jigs. They sell them in the store or you can go to lilypadjigs.com. That color works good out there often. Some others that work good there are cotton candy, thump me, sea monkey, candylicious and he also makes a Bardwell special.
