We are blessed down here on Lake Somerville. The white bass start moving up into the creeks in early December. This year the Lake was actually 4 feet above normal in December and still fairly muddy. Early on we were catching lots of white bass on curly tail jigs. We didn't get any rain in January and most of February so the lake receded back to normal and the water in the creeks just kept getting clearer and clearer. As it cleared it required smaller baits and better presentation in order to be successful. The fly rod became the weapon of choice. I started experimenting with bead chain clouser minnows. I was doing OK with chartreuse and white until a friend suggested using gray. I tied up a gray and white clouser and caught 10 WB in about 30 minutes before losing it. I went back to chartreuse & white but only caught one more. It instantly became my confidence bait and for good reason. I had several days catching around 20 or so white bass. As well, I caught hundreds of small crappie, bluegill and LMB. I gained even more confidence when I read that Charlie Cypert actually preferred to use a gray and white clouser over his own Cypert minnow in many situations. This continued to build to an incredible weekend. I went out Saturday and caught 32 white bass in the creeks. The creeks were crystal clear and you could see the white bass come up and take the fly. Then Sunday I had one of the greatest days of fishing I ever had. On Sunday I fished below the spillway. I fished with my 4 weight fly rod and gray & white clouser again. I slowly started catching fish and once I got the presentation down I started catching fish on just about every other cast. It was kind of comical. I was the only person out of about 50 catching fish so I kept getting asked what I was using over and over again. They were throwing in on top of me but couldn't get a bite on convetional gear. People even took pictures of my fly. I ended up catching 8 hyrbrids and 20 or so white bass before being crowded out of my spot. Catching the hybrids on my 4 weight was incredible. It was way over matched for those hybrids. They hit the fly so hard a couple times that they almost jerked the rod from my hands. There are no fly fishing records established for the Yegua so I decided to have them officially weighed at the Marina so I can submit them for water body records. I registered a 5 lb./ 22 inch hybrid, a 1.8 lb./ 16.25 inch white bass and a 5.9 lb / 23 inch buffalo. I lost 2 hybrids that were even bigger. I was using a 6 lb. tippet. I tried sizing up to a 12 lb. tippet but the fish ignored my bait and I couldn't get a bite so I had to go back to the 6 lb. tippet prior to landing the 5 lb. hybrid. No question it was all about presentation and being able to control the depth in the water column. That little fly sure created some Magical Moments for me!!!!!

Three potential water body records in one trip. Outstanding. Congratulation.

That's a unique slam...three records in one day. Nice going.
p.s. just doing a quick check...it looks to me that the hybrid record on the fly is 6.5 lbs for Sommerville, The other two should make it.
In my experience water body records for a lake take in an area both above and below the lake. For example Livingston records extend way up the Trinity river to Lock and dam and go well below the dam on the river.
Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks guys, These were caught in the spillway below Lake Somerville. That is Yegua Creek, not Lake Somerville.

Very Good Fishing! I will tie some gray & white and see how the fish react in my neck of the woods. I'll let you know how they do.

I've been using size 8 hooks for white bass and size 6 for the hybrids. The majority of the bigger bait has been eaten up and they are keying on smaller baits in the creeks I fish. I hope it works out great for you too. I'll be looking out for a report.

I've saw them spawning in the creeks this week, but not on the main lake yet. By the way, how many hybrids and white bass have you caught so far in 2016? It couldn't be zero, could it? So I'm leading by a couple hundred
