Friend bought a truck and this was on it. Assuming something to do with the safety chains???

I was initially thinking the same but I would have turned it upside down w that part below. I'll show it to someone who might know and report back

It's for a chain. Probably the trailer the previous owner was pulling had one of those screwdown hitches that had no hole for a padlock, so he installed this to be able to lock the safety chain to the truck for security from theft.

I would say it's for the electric brakes breakaway cable. You put the loop through the hole then double it back over the top.

I would say it's for the electric brakes breakaway cable. You put the loop through the hole then double it back over the top. Why do that when you can just loop it over the ball?

I'd say it's for break away and chain, looping over the ball is not DOT legal.

It is for a chain, but it is upside down. I would hate to be towing much of a trailer with the bumper of any truck.
