Or did I just go the wrong way. Meaning I launched at 59 at 7:30 this morning. There was not one other trailer in the lot. We started fishing about a mile upriver to 3 miles upriver. We caught 8. We talked to a yaker who said he limited out upriver last week but only a couple today. At 11:00 we decided to go to the airport. When I went to get my trailer, there was at least 15 trailers in the lot. We did not meet one boat coming back from upriver. Apparently everyone went downriver. So we go downriver to see if we can find the boats. Where the boats are, the fish should be, right. We went downriver 7 miles and found not one boat. So we were running out of time so tried a couple of spots to no avail. We gave up since we had no idea how far the trip would be to find the fish. Should I have gone downriver to start with?

Went back to the river for only my second trip since January when we limited out, and yesterday we also caught a limit. There were about a dozen boats and that many kayakers and for a Wednesday that is a lot of traffic. The problem was we really had to work for them because up until about 10 a.m. we had less than ten in the boat and we fished a lot of our old holes with very limited success until we finally found them in one small area, and then we had our limit by 1 pm. I've fished that river for years and have found that they can shut off and turn on like the flick of a light switch due to weather changes or how the stars line up whatever it is? Don't believe people that say the run is over because it isn't.

Airport and my boat doesn't have a shallow draft and my old legs won't let me pull the boat through the shallow riffles so I only went up to the first shallow water which was maybe two miles from the airport launch. The way those fish act to outside environmental conditions I think which is from experience over the years is that the bite can turn on and shut off from various things as I mentioned in my above post. Example: We fished several areas early in the morning fishing our way up to where we stopped and didn't do much good until around 10 am when the bite turned on. I mentioned to my fishing partner that we either hit a good hole or the fish just turned on or both. This was proven later as we made our way back to the launch after limiting and we came upon several kayakers that in one area of the river we had fished earlier they were dragging stringers and I actually saw a couple of fish being caught as we passed. The run down there seems to last a very long time and I've caught them as late as mid April down there and caught them as early as before Christmas. Taking into consideration the amount of fishing pressure and how hard they've been hammered in recent weeks I can see where some spots can be temporarily diminished in the numbers of fish until more fish move in so you just have to be patient and do a lot of practice casts until either they turn on or you hit a full hole, or both.

I could kick myself for not going to Airport when I thought about it. I've got to get back down there and give it a try. Thanks for the info.

You really don't know until you go and give it your best. Got skunked a week ago when I opted to hit the Frio at 99 after hearing they were biting there. It was one of those you should have been here yesterday deals, but that's just spring time white bassin!

Has anyone been catching crappie in the river? Last year we hammered both crappie and whites. The crappie stick to the brush along the banks.

Jimbo. Yes, it seems me and my daughter are always saying that. She still works so I may have to make a trip by myself next week, as much as I don't like that. It's just eating me alive that we can't really get into them. Tomorrow I'm going to continue with my search for them at Canyon Lake. Find them here no need to drive 100 miles huh?

I was thinking about taking the kayak out on Canyon on Sunday. See if there is anything up river yet.

I've been looking for them there couple times a week. No sign yet. But then, maybe they don't want minnows or the artificials I've been offering them. Hope you find them

Canyon should be coming on in the next couple of weeks if not already. I've checked my log books from back when the lake was up in the past years and I've got pictures of full ice chests dated February 18th 2003. Usually the hot white bass fishing in the Guad coincides with spring break, and another sign I use is when the peach trees blosum out.
