Anyone care to share any info on where to start looking for crappie on the Guadalupe River? Where to put in and what to look for.... I mostly fish saltwater and have recently started messing around on some of the lakes in the San Antonio area. Fishing for crappie is something I've always wanted to learn so any info on how to get started would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dunlap has crappie, though I have had MUCH better luck at Placid. Both have public Ramps under IH 35 and IH 10. McQueeny has a good crappie population but there is no public access like the other two. The other lakes starting at Seguin also have produced good catches, lakes Meadow and Wood. I would recommend Placid first as it is easy access and has produced many good catches for me. Good luck

That was good advice from wgpj. Placid is the best place to get a start. Honestly, the fish can be anywhere any given day. Dunlap can be a nit tougher in my opinion. But to answer your initial question, the best way to find fish on Placid is to try the docks and brush this time of the year fish are going to be anywhere between 12-20 ft of water

Awesome, thank y'all for the replies! I tried Dunlap last weekend and only caught a couple small largemouth. When fishing the brush are you looking for exposed brush or just submerged stuff in 12-20 ft? Also, would I be okay fishing with jigs or should I try to get minnows?

You're looking for both submerged brush or partially submerged often called "laydowns." And it doesn't have to be brush. Structure of any sort will often hold crappie. Jigs or minnows or both. As a suggestion, when I want to learn how and where to catch fish, I go with a pro. Slabseeker can teach you what you need to know and he is very reasonable. And a fun guy. Well worth the money
