Thanks for all the links! This is exactly what I was after, I think I just needed to visualize what I really needed. I'm definitely going with a center console. Made a few phone calls today and will be meeting with a guy about a 2001 Nitro CC 22ft w/t a 150hp Mercury.
I was a little hesitant to deal with a larger boat since I'll be fishing by myself most of the time but I think the benefits will more than make up for any extra work at the boat ramp.
I had to get my mind off of jon boats and start thinking bigger!

With boats as with most things, everything is a trade off. Smaller = lighter, more maneuverable, easier to horse around on a trailer. In certain situations this may be what you want. Bigger= more stability, comfort, especially in the wind, and safety. Having live wells and plenty of room for any gear you want is great. I don't know how old you are or your physical condition, but as an older guy, comfort and the ability to move around in the boat without fear of falling in are huge factors. Once you get used to handling a larger boat, it is a lot easier. Look at it this way. Try it out, if you don't like it, sell it and find what you want.

Find you a used Carolina skiff. Cheap boats, wont sink, very simple layouts and very customizable.
You will get wet in rough water, but never felt in danger in it.

I bought my 16ft tracker v-guide 2 years ago for $3000... I have maintained the 40hp and use it about 3 times a week.. Nothing fast or fancy... But I have 8 Rod holder mounted to it and lots of tackle in the storage and 2 anchors and 2 drift socks... It's a fishing machine.. I have literally fished for everything freshwater from the nueces River too Lake Tawakoni. It can get shallow or take the big waves at Tawakoni. I wasn't a fan of the Deep V before owning one but when it's time to upgrade, more than likely bigger deep v will be my route... Can't go wrong with a center console either.. The ability to walk around will make it feel very roomy. Aluminum is great for customizing. Surprisingly even the vhull aluminum boats are about as dry and smooth as the fiberglass... Except for a skiff they have a rough and wet ride. There is no one size fits all, but this v hull is about as close as it gets. And with just me, the 16ft isn't a big deal.

Getting wet on a flat bottom boat doesn't bother me at all since I can't stand cold weather so I won't be fishing much when its freezing outside anyway. I book a redfish guide service a few times a year down at the coast and the guide I use has a 20ft Weldbuilt CC flat bottom with a 150 yamaha jetdrive. Its a rough looking bare bones boat but it is a great fishing boat. I've been having trouble finding a weldbuilt boat like I want online for sale. But now that I'm seeing some of the deep V options I think I'm starting to see the benefits of one of those they look good!

Looks like a BIG boat, which is good. I never understood why the console is placed so far forward....
