Just curious as to how others preserve their fish.
How do you freeze your crappie? Do you put them in a ziplock bag with water or without water? Or do you vacuum seal them? How long are they good for if you freeze them in water -vs vacuum sealed? And how many months are considered old before you toss them out?

Always with water - no air in the bag.
After cleaning and before bagging, I run them under cold water and firmly press the fish between my hands, with a hand washing motion.

Been freezing in water for 30 years, never had any that wasn't good when thawed out.

I want to vacuum seal, but haven't spent the money yet. I place mine in a freezer bag and then fill with water. Make sure you get the air out as much as possible! Works well no freezer burn!

Water and freeze. Never had fish go bad. I use table salt (not much) in my water. Helps keep the meat firm when thawing.

Frozen in water. I've kept them for more than a year and they were just fine.

Like others have said, freeze in water. Vacuum sealed from my experience does not work near as well.

I like to vacuum seal, they take up much less room in the freezer. You can also thaw them
out much quicker than a block of ice.

Freeze in bag with water. Just beware, if your freezer dies in July while your on a 2 week vacation, you will have a mess on your hands. Don't ask me how I know...

Frozen in water. Have enough fish fries they never last longer than a year or two. But that said I'm prolly getting low or low for me as tough as Palestine has been this winter. That's usually been my winter time freezer. They never go bad or get freezer burnt if you leave em in the lake till its time to cook em!!

Good suggestion by using a little salt. I'll give this a try on my next bag...

I was asking this question because somehow I have picked over a bag from July & Aug and I was wondering if they were still good or not. I'll make sure they next in line for the grease...

Never catch enough to really worry about it but what does make it in the freezer is usually vacuum sealed.

I have never added water just fill the bag mash out air freeze.Never had any burn.Darrell
