Cabelas have their combo fly rod/reels on sale and I'm interested in getting one for bank fishing . What I mainly need to know is what weight for rod and line is best in case you hooked a bass upwards of 5-lbs or so ? Not saying it will happen but just in case. Mainly I'd be after smaller pan fryers but in case I hook one say 2 or 3 lbs I'd like to know my combo could handle it.Right now I just use a casting rod & reel from the bank .

For the price I like my Three Forks 3/4 Wt. It's 7'6" and has a decent action. Caught a 5.5#er this week on it and have seen this exact rod land a 12# freshwater drum. I know it can handle big fish if they're played out right. Reels can be had for cheap, mine just holds my line, others actually use it for the drag and to reel in fish. Decide how you're going to use it and go from there.

You can get 8'6" or 9' rods and line weight is 4-8 depending which rod/reel combo you choose. If your on a regular computer you can see the chart showing about 6 or more choices of reel size and combos. Since I would do bank fishing for bass or small fish I'll probably try for one around the 5# weight for line and pole .

I started out with a Cabelas RLS Combo. I got the 9' with a 5 wt. I use it now for a back up. I did have to take it back twice for a replacement rod. Without any pressure on the rod about 5 inches from the tip broke while casting. I haven't had any problems with the one I have now. It cast well and I have caught fish with it. Good Luck in Fly Fishing! Let us know what you get.

For a little more, I would look at a TFO Pro II 8 1/2 or 9' 5wt. Cabelas Prestige Plus or Primier Reel and one of there lines. Cabelas has always had good customer service But TFO has a warranty that can not be beat. IMHO

5 wt will handle most situations including a 2' carp. Years ago I hooked one on the trinity river and took 30 minutes to get it in, but it took 30 minutes. I was also using a 6 lb leader so I took my time. I was using a Orvis 5 wt so I know it will handle something decent sized.
I'm on other forums that deal with the old turbo powered Buicks.;)

Got another question , some reels have #s' like #1 , #2, and #3 . But what if when they don't have a # but there is an "A" or "B" by a reel and what do they mean . Way back when I was in high school me and my best friend had flyrods/reels combo but have no idea what kind they were but when I fished I worked the rod in my right hand and dragged in the line with the left hand but when I reeled in the line I helt the rod with the left hand and reeled with the right hand . How would I know what reel to choose ?

the numbers and and letters refer to the size of the reel. You would want one designed for the correct size line. in my example for the cabela's reels you should go with a #2. the are both meant for a 5-6wt line and backing. with the modern reels they have a one way bearing and can be set up for right or left hand retrieve. simple to change over. every shop that I have gone to will install the line and backing, and set it up for right or left hand retrieve for free.

What about Cabelas , do they also install the line and backing, and set it up for right or left hand retrieve for free or would that be something I would need to do ? Also what line for backing ?

cabelas will do it all for free. Backing would just be the standard 20lb Dacron backing material.
