Noticing on the golf course, over by our house, they've sprayed a whole bunch of it, weed killer, pre-emergent, I don't know. But I figure it might be getting close to time to start messing with it.

We still have a some clover type weeds around, most of the yard is dormant, but curious what and when should I put down to keep the weeds gone, and the grass strong.

When the ground temperature reaches 55 degrees and is going to stay that away. You will waste it if before. You could spray the clover now while the grass is still dormant.

Brian in your area I would put down pre-emergent March 1st to get the max life out of it. I typically put it down Valentines Day or there abouts depending on the rain forecast. It has to be watered/rained in. Last about 3 months. If you do multiple applications a year you'll see a huge difference in your weed decline. Spring/Summer/Fall apps. It's one of the few non organic treatments I use on the lawn. It works really well.

They are probably spraying glyphosate and a kicker preemergent to get them to March. Then they will spray their preemergent for summer annuals. The kicker is just to keep any late winter annuals from emerging after they just cleaned things up.

Derek what pre-emergent do you like to use? When I lived in West Texas, I used TEAM. It seemed to work pretty good. I haven't looked for any preemergent here in New Braunfels yet.

I used Vigiro last year in the spring, summer and fall. Sold at Home Depot. They have 2 different kinds. Regular pre emerge and pre emerge with fertilizer. I used the regular. Most of my neighbors have a lot of Henbit and Dandilions up right now. I have zero weeds, except in a flower bed and a big potting plant that the pre emerge didn't hit. I'm happy with it.

Since we have had a warm stretch I think I am going to put out pre emerge in the next week or as soon as there is a good chance for rain. I was reading the other day that whatever is in pre emerge is not affected by the cold, so even if you do put it down a little early you won't lose any of your pre emerge power when needed. Better early than late.

I couldn't agree more about Neil Sperry, I enjoy his radio show and his new book is a great read. Organized by Month what to do. Plant recommendations and warnings.

You have about 10-14 days after you apply to get it watered in with a good 1/2 to 3/4" of water. Left any longer and it's useless.

If you look at the active ingredient you will notice it's less than 1%. Vigiro is mostly fillers that's why it's much cheaper. If it worked for you then you hit the timing exactly right and most likely you applied more than what the recommended rate is. I actually have never heard anyone that said they were happy with it so congrats.

I did use it a little heavy. I have like 7500-8000sq feet and 2 bags cover 10,000. I'm not married to and always willing to try something else. What pre emerge do you recommend that is easy to locate in stores?

There isn't much choice for a homeowner over the counter. Halts by Scotts is superior to what you used but since you did get results then just use a higher rate and hope you hit the timing right. I spray simazine for grassy weeds in March and November and Barricade for broadleaf in February and September. These cover all the basis. Where homeowners go wrong is they don't water it in enough. We always try to time with a moderate to heavy rainfall then apply a few days ahead. You got results so good job.
