Just got a 10 ft Wally Marshall jig rod. Need some advice on type of line and weight for this rig . Thanks.

you're going to get quite a few opinions on this one....it boils down to what you like and how it works for the type fishing you will be doing.i'm still learning but i like the bonehead mono, the bonehead braid and tie on a fluro carbon leader.a lot of members on here like the mr. crappie hi-vis line.There are so many to choose from.I'm sure others will chime in with their preferences.Good Luck!

I have really liked Mr Crappie line, use it for my light line rigs. Very abrasion resistant and limp.

I use Mr Crappie 6# hi-vis and in cold weather it has memory just like all mono. So, I always fill my reel and first thing after I launch my boat, is to let the line almost all the way out while heading to my first waypoint and just let it drag behind the boat. Then, reel it in and you are good to go. It won't get rid of all the memory in cold water but, it sure does help.
PS: don't tie anything on the end of the line, just drag it with no weight at all.

I love my braid/flouro combination. My dock shooting rods still have mono on them..yep..Mr Crappie 6lb.

iv tried many combos and have found for me the best is 20 LB Power Pro Slick Braid with a #12 swivel and a 15"piece of Trilene Green Big Game 12 LB test Mono. iv tried Fluorocarbon leader but found it to be too brittle. i love the sensitivity of Braid and it lasts all year.also when you hook a big Sandy or LM and they rip your line all under the dock pipes it holds up well! iv landed some 4 lb bass with this set up.also there is NO line twist or memory!

I use 12# Bonehead braid & a Flouro leader. Can't beat the sensitivity of braided line.
Even while fishing a 1/32 jig, I catch a lot of fish that I just know that something isn't right.
These are fish I didn't catch before I switched to braid.
And when you set the hook on a 9lb 15oz bass, you can get him out of the thick stuff

We used to do this during our offshore trips, just drag the line out behind the boat! It works GREAT!

I fish 6lb mono on my bridge and dock shooters and 10lb floro on my timber rods. I use some braid in the winter fishing deep but just use a sharpie to black up the line 6' or so. I've never learned how to tie the Floro to the braid yet. I've landed several 7-9lb bass on the 6lb line and a few over 10 on the timber setups. You can sure feel the bite better on braid but I've reeled up a few sets of lips too over the years!

For vertical jigging , I have used suffix hi vis 20 lb braid for the last few years. Sometimes with 12 Lb leader.
Comes in handy when bonus fish hit . I can't feel mono more than 12 ft or so.

As mentioned already, you'll get 50 different answers to this question. Here's mine...
If you're a relative novice at crappie fishing, use the KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) method.
Don't bother with complicated leaders and line combos. Just get a good quality High-Vis line in 6-8lb test, and tie directly to your jig(s).
My thinking on this is simple: Crappie fishing has a lot to do with feel. The best crappie guys out there can not only find fish, but they know a bite when they feel it (or see it...hence the High-Vis line). Putting a leader, swivel, etc between you and your jig isn't helping your "feel" if your new to the "thump".
If you are a novice, you're going to get hung up a lot too. The mono is easy to break off and re-tie. As you progress as a crappie guy, maybe you'll decide to change over braid...but I doubt it.
I personally use a line I don't see many people mentioning, but it's probably similar to Mr. Crappie High-Vis. Very low memory.

I love it all! Bonehead braid, I love, with or w/o a leader, in Texas lakes, does it really matter?. Currently using 6lb vanish fluorocarbon and need to replace. Wally Marshal is great, but has a lot of memory if using a spinning reel, so have to replace often. But, i know it is on old 2014 fish(Greg), but caught this 10.3 on 4lb Wally Mashall, and BP has it on sale...Can't beat that!
