Just got a new fishing yak and can't wait to use it this spring. I live near the elm fork of the trinity river. Is it even worth fishing? Is the fishing good near Lake lewisville on the river? I would mainly be targeting bass. Largemouth, striper, hybrids, whites

The Trinity can be dangerous. Be sure you know where the spillways are and how much they are releasing from Lewisville. There are some boat ramp easy launches in Carrollton. If in doubt, paddle upstream from the launch and return back to the initial launch. There is good fishing in the Trinity, but it's not the easiest body of water to fish.

I've seen the spillway at Sandy lake road, it looks like there is a place to take out near it.

Yes, there are launches above and below that spillway. That particular spillway on Sandy Lake road has claimed several lives. Do not go anywhere near it.

Second that you don't want to be anywhere near the river right now. It is raging.

I checked the corps website and it says they are releasing almost 6000 cfs. I wouldn't be fishing for a couple months anyways

All of the elm fork is dangerous right now because of the release from Ray Roberts, Lewisville, and Grapevine so stay away right now but....
During normal conditions when the river is calm it can be a great fishery. You can access it in a bunch of locations. Too many to list really. Sandy lake is cool because you can go for miles north on the trinity or you can cut up Denton creek and then into some flood control lakes only accessible by water. If you have a buddy to help shuttle you can launch at LLELA or FM3040 and fish down to Sandy Lake spillway launch. There are spillways starting at Sandy Lake and south from there so know the area you are launching and fishing.
