with a 400 load? motor gear and person?

how about a 500# load ?

if so how fast on smooth water and no wind ?

what do you have on your 14X48 jon boat?

I will respectfully disagree. When I was a teenager, I had a 14 foot Jon boat with a 7.5 hp engine made by McCullough that would plane the boat just fine with my brother and I and fuel and fishing tackle. This boat would plane at less than full throtle, too. Unless you are talking about a glorified mower engine with a lower unit, I would bet money it will plane. Expect speeds around 15 mph.

I have an older 14ft alumacraft that is extra wide, the 5 ft. model. It has a 8 HP 4 stroke Evinrude.

this boat will plane with me in it with my fishing gear just fine. i am 200 lbs.

You won't get there quick, but it moves out just fine for what it is.

I would not go any smaller than this. No doubt a 15-25 hp would be BEST!

I had a Lowe 1440 modified V. 14 foot long 40 inch wide bottom. Had a 9.9 two-stroke tiller Mariner on it. It would jussssst allllmmmmmmooossssstttt plane. frown It was just me and my fishing gear and a cooler and 3 gallon gas tank and a plywood floor I put in. Sure wish I had that boat back with a 15 on it. Woulda been just right. thumb

Unless someone is giving you that 10hp get you 15hp or bigger (25). You will like it alot better.

actually its a 9.9 johnson, a 2001 model.

someone advised that if the carburator jet (s) were changed to the one (s) for the 15 horse motor the 9.9 would produce 15 hp. is this true? can anyone verify this little trick?

where would one find jets for the 15 to put into the 9.9 hp.
