If I buy a boat out of state from a individual (not a dealer) do I have to pay sales tax on it?
This may sound like a dumb question but I've been told yes and no. So if someone on here knows the answer and is 100% sure please let me know and thanks.

When you register it in Texas, you will have to pay sales tax. If you are asking if you have to pay the seller in his state, I don't have a clue. Never heard of it, but that don't matter much.

You will only pay sales tax in Texas when you register the boat.

100% sure you pay sales tax on a boat when you bring one into Texas not previously titled in your name. Without a Texas dealer's receipt showing tax was already paid, they collect it at the registration. I did this myself once. Be SURE to get their state's title documents for what you buy, properly filled out for your purchase. These get turned in to Texas so that it can be retitled here in your name. Check into whether the other state titles outboards as well as boats, as Texas does. Get a separate bill of sale for the trailer. Be sure that the price on the bill of sale for the boat/motor is ONLY for the boat/motor, or you WILL be required to pay tax on that full amount at TPWD, then pay tax on the trailer AGAIN when you register it at the county tag office. Ask me how I know that last part, LOL.

Call the state and they will answer all your questions as well as tell you all of the documents that you will need.
