So I have a little water in my lower unit making the oil milky and runny can I just change it and use it this weekend or should it just go to the shop now? Thanks

Do you like to gamble? It all depends on how bad & what's going on with it. Find any fishing line on propshaft? Could be fine, could have a catastrophic seal failure & purge lube in minutes....

Last person that I saw ask this question, tried running it the next weekend and ruined the lower unit. Take it to the shop or fix yourself. You can use a bicycle pump and some soapy water to find the leak. I did mine last Spring and was pretty easy to repair.

My mechanic told me I saved thousands one day after he diagnosed my motor issue. It acted funky on the water one day. I called from the lake to see what he thought rather than ignore it. He said that caution & call saved a blown powerhead. They don't have a lot or margin when things aren't right.....

Interested in how the bicycle pump to test lower unit for leaks works. Is there a fitting that will fit in the lower fill screw hole? Where to find one?
Put the plug in.

Youtube it. You have to buy one of the lower unit oil pumps that has a threaded end for your motor. I found mine at Walmart for around $5-10,don't really remember the price but it was cheap. Basically, put that on the pump hose then pump it up to the pressure you need. Then with lower unit pulled off spray your soapy water. Pump and all was around $10-15 total.
When you are finished, put the fitting back on the oil pump and you can still use it to fill the lower unit.

i would change both of the seals and see where it goes. Last year my engine had some surging problems. came home and opened screw to lower unit and there was no oil in there. Little that came out was all discolored. Thought i had to get new lower unit for my yammi. Decided to change both seals. cost less than 30 dollars and an hour on youtube. Luckily it fixed the problem. Been using boat for about a year now and everything seems fine. Ive changed the lower unit oil about 3 times now just to make sure oil is okay and it turned out fine. BTW i have no previous training in motor diagnosing. Everything ive learned has come off of youtube.
