I after retirement I am spending one summer purely fishing, with a goal catch all the possible fish species of Texas freshwater on a fly rod. As kid my brother and myself attempted to catch as many Texas species as possible. Made for cold days on the coast at granny's for Christmas. I wish phones and such where as good then as now. We would have great laughs with tiny fish pics

There is some awesome sturgeon fishing available in the Portland area. If you time your trip right you'll also go out and catch American Shad early in the morning for bait. Don't laugh, they run 1-2 lbs and fight hard. The timing on this would be late May or Early June. If you're fishing the Columbia you'll be up in the Gorge and have beautiful scenery to look at while you freeze your nuts off. Sturgeon are available on both the Columbia and Willamette rivers. You can catch over sized on the river in downtown Portland. Largest I caught was 13'. There is NO retention for Sturgeon allowed. The legal slot size used to be 38" to 54" nose to fork of tail. Anything under that slot is called a shaker and anything over is called over sized. All the big ones are female. I used to really enjoy fly fishing in Oregon when i lived in CA. used to go up to Rogue River every few years. I am originally from Sierra Nevada Mountains in CA to i very much feel like i am home up there!
