I had a spot on Lewis Smith AL a couple years ago that was 21" & close to 6lbs. My next biggest is around 4lbs. I don't think I've ever caught one over 3lbs in Texas. I'd love to see the record get broke!

Only if there is enough forage. If there isn't enough food for the population, then you end up with a bunch of half-starved dinks. I think the last TPWD report for Alan Henry said that the massive number of unders was mainly due to poor food supply. It'll be interesting to see if they introduce another type of baitfish or something. If they do, then watch out.

There are schools of shad all over the lake, at any time of year. I have seen schools that block the sonar from seeing bottom in many instances. Don't let them feed you a line of bull, because there is enough shad in that lake to take care of ANY bass population. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I'd like to see them stock AH with trout. If they did that I would all but guarantee a new state record would come out of there. Spot and largemouth.

Yes, there are big schools of shad, but Gizzard shad grow quickly and can get too big to be prey. When that happens, they become useless to the man-made ecosystem. It is a very well known and documented problem with using Gizzards as the forage species in a lake. Threadfins are perfect prey, but they would all die off in the winter.

cove_crawler,

MOST of the baitfish I have seen are threadfin or minnows. I have seen a few schools of gizzard shad, but mostly shiners and threadfin is what I see. I have seen balls about 10' across and 10' deep, at least that is where the fish were biting and spitting up the shad. I know what a gizzard shad looks like, and you are right, they can get too big, but I have not seen that problem, as of yet. At least fishing the lake every 2 weeks in the summer, fishing in winter might be another thing, though. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
