With another rainy weekend, I didn't get to fish. So I stayed in and checked on other gear.

I have this spool of BPS' Excel Mono (10 lb test) that I got with a gift card last year.
I used this line only once.

The first and only time I've used this line:
Half of the times I set the hook, the line snapped on me right at the knot.
I've lost some good fish, and good lures, and was very frustrated.

Anyone else has this problem?

I was using my same old knot that I've always used (Double-Uniknot)


After getting back home, I emptied out the reel of the mono and replaced with Seaguar Flouro.
The spool of BPS Excel has been sitting in a box since then.

I've had good luck with it in years past. I had a spool of 10 lb test and 6 lb test 12 to 15 years ago and was very happy with the breaking strength and the low memory of both, but I've read on Bass Pro Shops website that some people say that they have changed the line and it's not as good now.

For the past year I have been using Excel line in 6, 10, and 14 pound clear/blue and have had no issues so far. But if I was having the break on hook sets you have had, it would convince me to change. I have been trying it after using Berkley Big Game for over 20 yrs. I wanted the clear/blue fluorescent for seeing my line better and found the Excel at a good price. Time will tell I guess.

Could have been an old spool. I'd take it back and exchange it.

Using a double uni-knot, were you using it as a leader? What were you tying it to?

It definitely will not get better with age. I'd return it.
